How can you further spoof the genuine article?

If Ohio gets a good pass defense and an offense that can produce eating up the clock? Are you kidding me? A team like that could do very well in the MAC.
The team you just described is Kent State circa 2004 and they went 5-6. Toledo won the league (ugh) last year with the worst pass defense in the conference. It's all about the O.

If we keep that kind of attitude the MAC is never going to be more than a footnote in college football history.

Huh? How did we go from talking about how Ohio's system will fare in the league to its historical implications and significance to the conference!

The MAC has established itself as far more than a footnote well before Frank Solich stepped foot in Athens and whether his system succeeds or fails is rather irrelevent in the grand scheme of the conference. One of the Miami lurkers can surely fill a page on the accomplishments of their team alone, let alone BG, UT and the rest of the conference.

If anything, the offensive innovation brought on by the MAC will further solidify this conference as anything but an afterthought. The spread/option, originated right here in little old BG, has now spread to Las Vegas, Nevada and is about to take on the SEC after being largely responsible for Utah's BCS bowl win, the first ever for a non-BCS school. Clemson snatched Rob Spence away from UT and Indiana plucked Hoeppner away from Miami based on their offensive success. The MAC is not only more than a footnote. It has become a trendsetter, and for that we should be proud.

The Oklahoma assistant AD was a steal, but I am not sure Solich is a good hire. He was fired from UNL because he had trouble recruiting and was too predictable on offense. The talent level at UNL had fallen way behind Oklahoma and Texas and their wasn't a snowball chance in &*%$ that he could win a Big XII title. Personally, I feel Grobe was a far better coach than Solich!

That was basically my point. The MAC already has the offense, but to take it to the next level, the conference needs to step up the defense to compete from top to bottom against the Non conferencer teams.

If people continue to neglect the defense it isn't going to help the MAC in the long run.

That was my point.

I see what you're saying, but it's not like the league has necessarily *neglected* the defense. It's just the best teams happen to have absolutely dominant offensive units that overshadow the defense, much like the great Florida (passing) and Nebraska (rushing) teams employed in the most recent past.

Most of the recent conference champions had a above average stop unit. Heck, even Lou West got a head coaching job based on the performance of the UT defense from a year ago.

I think BG, Northern and Miami are OK with the steps they've taken to position their programs nationally. The Kents, Ohios and Buffalos of the seemingly need wholesale improvement-offensively and defensively-to get to that level.
