The best use of the TE position is to send them in the middle seam to split today's en vogue Cover-2 defense. That's the most common use nowadays with cover-2 being so rampant, but in the end the key to a TE is someone who is able to find the seams in the zone and get there. If its a man coverage the TE must be athletic enough to beat the LBs. Ours have not been the types who are going to consistently get into these seams or beat LBs on routes. As a result we've not been using them as much as some teams.falconboy wrote:What does that mean? Why do we need to get more athletic at TE befoe we use em'? That doesnt make sense to me. :coo-coo: Is that the reason why we only pass to the TE every other leap year it seems?

Our TEs in recent years have not been as good of athletes as typical MAC LBs. They are good blockers with good hands, but they're not athletic enough to really be used in the down the field passing game. Conversely TEs aren't real useful in a quick hitting passing game either, as they usually cannot get off the LoS cleanly.
I would love to see us use the TE as a weapon, but in the end it takes a special athlete to become a dominant TE. A stud TE ranks right up there with 300 pound athletic DTs when it comes to what's most difficult to find in recruiting.
