Illinois QB Transfers to Ohio
Bower Will Have Two Seasons to Play After Sitting Out 2005 Campaign
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio football coaching staff has announced that Illinois quarterback Brad Bower will transfer from the Big Ten program and has elected to join the Bobcats as a walk-on.
In compliance with NCAA rules that apply to any player transferring from one Division I-A institution to another, Bower will sit out the 2005 campaign. He will then have two years of eligibility remaining at Ohio.
Bower, a native of Burr Ridge, Ill., played in seven games a year ago for the Fighting Illini as a redshirt freshman. He began the season as the backup to Jon Beutjer, a preseason Davey O’Brien Award candidate, but quickly saw action when Beutjer went down with an injury in the second game of the season. Splitting time with fellow backup Chris Pazan, Bower finished the season with 658 yards passing on 57 completions and his 119.47 rating led the team.
Bower made his collegiate debut in relief of Beutjer in the second half of a 35-17 loss to UCLA. He led Illinois on two scoring drives and posted 102 yards through the air on 11-of-15 passing. The next week, Bower got the start against Western Michigan and recorded what would be his finest outing of the year, completing 10-of-19 passes for 177 yards to lead Illinois to a 30-27 victory over the Broncos. Bower also received starts at Minnesota and at home against Iowa and Indiana. He threw two first quarter touchdowns to pace Illinois to a 26-22 victory over the Hoosiers in the last home game of the season.
Part of then head-coach Ron Turner’s 2003 recruiting class, Bower was a consensus all-state performer at Hinsdale Central High School. A threat on the ground as well as through the air, Bower racked up 2,866 total yards and accounted for 48 touchdowns as he led Hinsdale Central to a conference championship and a berth in the semifinal round of the state playoffs. Bower was 28-6 in his three years as a starter and he set 10 school passing records.
