Perry Stadium incident.
Of course, it is where the visiting team typically gets off the bus......

I took a drive by today too...the stadium is beginning to look like the dam in the Charlton Heston classic "Earthquake". While most of us are fine with the idea of Los Angeles being blasted with millions of gallons of water, I'd prefer to have the old Doyt stay in one piece. "Bring the house down" is supposed to be an expression.
I suppose we shouldn't be too suprised. The place is approaching it's 40th birthday and it's been sitting out there in the elements with little in the way of improvements. I guess we should expect it to start falling apart sooner or later. I'm 43 and stuff's been falling off of me (well, my hair anyway) for years and I dress warmly. I'd hate to think what I'd look like if I was sitting where the Doyt is without a jacket...
Oh yeah...any truth to the rumor that Mawel Soler was seen running from the stadium just after "the fall"?

It doesn't look like the concrete blocks were connected except at the top with the steel fixings. I dunno, that's all I see that coulda held it up. If you go to Yager Stadium and look up, there are cracks in the concrete. It happens. doesn't mean it's unsound. And that is a BIG piece of concrete!

What a sad state of affairs that we have 3 pages of drivel on how a piece of concrete fell off of a glorified high school stadium with no one around. If the stadium collapses when it is empty does it make more noise than a normal game day crowd? Lets not wax poetic on the Doyt. It isn't pretty, it surely isn't a classic and it is rarely filled.
I am glad no one was hurt in the empty stadium. I am sad that someone actually rushed to take pictures of it. What dismays me more is that this is a hot topic on a probable top 25 team's board.
Let the cries of blasphemy begin.

The Doyt may not be the greatest stadium on the face of the earth, but it is a place that a lot of us love. If you can't realize that, maybe you are in the wrong place.bgou wrote:What a sad state of affairs that we have 3 pages of drivel on how a piece of concrete fell off of a glorified high school stadium with no one around. What is sad is people who claim to be fans of a team who put down others for taking interest in it. This isn't blasphemy, its just stupid - really, really stupid.

Seriously, its been said a million times before in a million different threads on a million different boards... if it offends you so much, why bother reading it? Or if you REALLY need to comment about it, why be so snide? Even if we hated the Doyt, its what we have. And what we have just turned out to be a potentially major hazard. (Or, admittedly, just a fluke accident.) It's news. News gets discussed. No different than if the concrete fell from AA, a frat house, University Hall, or the Union.
And personally, I'm very thankful that someone "rushed out there to take pictures". I'm 3 hours away from BG, and having a visual of what went down worked for me.
Besides, we've filled alot more than three pages with drivel on much more useless topics than this. In comparison, this one's a Pulitzer!

If this thread dismays you, you should be thankful that you weren't here prior to the NIU game in 2003. We spent several pages arguing over grammar.bgou wrote: What dismays me more is that this is a hot topic on a probable top 25 team's board.

With that said, I would like to point out a needed correction.Flipper wrote: If this thread dismays you, you should be thankful that you weren't here prior to the NIU game in 2003. We spent several pages arguing over grammar.

There is a variety of ways to type this sentence correctly. This isn't one of them.bgou wrote:It isn't pretty, it surely isn't a classic and it is rarely filled

Doyt Stadium is of its time. Late 60's-early 70's. It is not picturesque. There are many areas that need to be renovated. And there seems to be a crazy to raze anything built in the 60s/70s and construct something that looks like the early 1900's (Camden Yard/The Jake) or super futuristic (Soldier Field). But..... Its our "glorified high school stadium".bgou wrote:What a sad state of affairs that we have 3 pages of drivel on how a piece of concrete fell off of a glorified high school stadium with no one around. Which begs the question, what makes a college stadium a college stadium..... Fancy concession stands serving corporate fast food? Seats with cup holders? Big Screen TV's? The necessary concrete structure covered with red brick or colorful metal panels..... which I would contend is counter to the working middle class nature of BGSU and its alumni.

I am just wondering when UT will require their students to purchase and use a dictionary?Redwingtom wrote:We are actually "Rural parochial" according to some UT loser on the MACBBS board...I know...it made no sense to me eitherTech83 wrote:which I would contend is counter to the working middle class nature of BGSU and its alumni.

Now if they said "Rural provincial", they might get close to the actual campus, but not to students since a large number come from urban areas such as Columbus and Cleveland. But they would be saying Rural, non urban..... Yeah - no kidding.....

But we are talking about UT

Here's the deal. This is a very very newsworthy topic for a couple reasons. First of all, and I'm not prone to random bouts of hyperbole, if this would have happened on gameday it could have easily killed somebody. I know I know, if if if.
The problem now is, if we don't do anything about it, and God forbid it does happen again and kill or injure someone, we would be CRUCIFIED in the public eye. Just imagine the sportscenter lead for that Saturday night. Camera shots of crying co-eds, Interview with Krebs (who resigns along with half of the Athletic staff the following week). Criminal negligence cases followed by civil cases followed by the absolute gutting of our football program. For years when people hear Bowling Green, they don't think of Omar Jacobs or high-octane offenses, they think of tragedy. Something like this could cripple our entire athletic program for 10 years minimum. It's a lot of speculation, but the above scenario is not unreasonable.
Our AD office is filled with smart people who I'm sure have already talked about the above scenario. Because of this, they will no doubt be forced to do something to ensure the structural integrity of the Doyt. If I had to guess, I would say they will err on the side of caution. This means that a ton of money may now be dumped into they doyt. This money has to come from somewhere, whether it be insurance policies or funding meant for the Sebo Center. Seeing as how we already have funding issues, this could be a big snag as far as Sebo construction timelines go.
For these reasons, I'm surprised we don't have ten pages already. I am concerned as hell about this. I agree that the incident in a vaccuum means almost nothing. However, the ripples that this could potentially cause are a definite cause for concern.
Roll Along!
