Future BG recruit dominates Weds. night game!

Post by 1987alum »

Yes, more proud papa talk ...

It was cool & drizzling, but your Flag Football Falcons were red hot tonight, in particular one Noah Smith. He made the first three "tackles" on a four-and-out series. Then took the first handoff, scooted around the left corner and ran, untouched, into the end zone. He was a missile on defense the whole night and finished strong on offense with this great sequence.

He was at QB and I told him to hand the ball to one of the other players; this often makes our QBs sad because they all want to run with the ball. Noah looked at the other player and said, "I'm going to give you the ball, then I'm going to knock someone down so you can score a touchdown." Although the play came up a bit short, Noah did as he said he would.

He moved to the line on the next play, which ended with him scuffling with one of the Penn State players. Now, I've instructed Noah that, when your blocking, you keep blocking until the guy in front of you falls to the ground or the whistle blows. So, he had blocked the kid to the ground and the Penn State player lept up and try to toss Noah to the ground. Noah, obviously, wasn't going to let that happen. The next play was our last and my asst. coach looked at me and said, "I think we should run toward Noah's side." Good call. Noah ran right through the kid in front of him, found the kid he scuffled with on the previous play and flattened him - clean, legal, solid blocking.

The kids played a great game overall and Falcon fans can rest assured that these kids are representing the school well. We ended with Ay Ziggy Zoomba so loud the other team just stopped and stared!

Great update '87!!

Josh has been playing better on the O line for his Green Bulldogs youth C team. Two nights ago, one of the other parents complimented Josh on his improving techniques and made his night. THEN, another guy said "Someday, you'll be playing for the Buckeyes!"
Josh froze in his tracks, looked up and said "Not me! I'll be playing for the Bowling Green Falcons!!" The guy gasped in disbelief and I triumphantly escorted the 2015 BG recruit to his "team bus" waiting in the parking lot. A lady standing by said "BG? Well they're pretty good too!"
Josh's team is 1-1-1...last game was a scoreless tie.

Keep the updates coming, '87.

These stories are the greatest. I can't wait until I have my own son so that he too can learn what it is to be a Falcon. I guess for now I am going to have work on my 6 year old brother.

Freak:

That is so awesome. I know Josh was struggling and I'm glad he stuck it out AND that people are noticing! That's something to be proud of!

Of course, I always knew he'd have his team priorities straight!

1987, I love Noah's enthusiasm! Sounds like he is way ahead of the other kids in understanding the idiosyncracies of the game. 8)

Freak, I love how your son responded. I can only hope my kids would do the same! :D

BTW, my oldest has his first real CYO game on Saturday. It is a fifth graders only team and he is playing tight end and defensive end. They scrimmaged at the Glass Bowl last Sunday. On the first defnsive play he sacked the QB! :supz: And on offensive he had two catches for like 50 yards and his teams only TD. :!:

Whog,

Nice! Sounds like your son is doing well. Cool 2 hear.

'87,
Yes, Josh struggled for his first year but as long as he is having fun, that's all that matters to me. He is only in the 2nd grade and needs to learn the game before worrying about W's or L's. I keep telling him you won't get the love on the Oline but that is where the real football is played. Without the line, the QB's, RB's, WR's and others can't do a thing. That's why it takes 11 players doing their job correctly for a play to work.
I am very proud of his "stick to it" attitude and always tell him the BG players didn't get to where they are now by just giving up when it got tougher. I love the little bugger....

Noah sounds like he has really taken to the game...way to go Dad!

Warthog: Awesome! We'll be expecting him to register many more sacks in the Glass Bowl ... while wearing orange!

Freak: Agreed on all counts. We don't keep score in our league and the players constantly rotate. All 8 of our kids carried the ball last night and all 8 played QB. I have only three rules for the team: 1) Hustle; 2) Listen to your coaches; 3) Be a good teammate. I remind them of the rules before the game and when I gather them together after each game, I tell them that we "won" because we followed all three of the rules.
