As a male, I certainly hope no one ever tries to test me for cancer of the cervix.

When faced with tragedy, the natural, human impulse is to try and find a way to prevent it from happening again. The trick is finding away to balance that impulse with realistic expectations and actions.

Is it realistic to demand that every athlete interested in participating in NCAA sports be given a blood test to rule out every disease that might impact his or health?......Probably not.

I don't even KNOW what race Aaron was. However, I do know that testing for Sickle Cell based on race alone is quite common. This is a common disease in African Americans (I think I read like 1:500?), but much more rare in other races. If there is a disease that seems to be prevalent in my race, moreso than others, I would have no qualms about being tested for that disease while other races of people went without said testing.

Since I was a football player for Bowling Green, I should know what kind of policy they have here for physicals. I got my physical from my family Dr. at home and I never got another one my entire career. I don't know how your D-III school did it, but I do know how they do it here.

Sickle Cell facts...

Post by BelieveNBG »

-Sickle cell is inherited.
-It can be a disease in some, but only a trait in others.
-Babies are tested for the disease.
-Teens and adults are tested to see if they carry the trait to determine if they can pass the disease to their children.

Basically, if your parents don't carry the trait, there is no reason to suspect you could have the disease, regardless of race. If you have been tested as a baby for the disease, there is no real reason to be tested years later for the disease. It sounds like Aaron's case may have been rare in that this disease did not show up as a baby and it lay dormant, only to turn into a disease later in life. Due diligence is being tested as a baby, not to have continued testing later in life, unless you are trying to bear children and would like to know if you carry the trait and could pass along the disease.

As one poster stated, don't point fingers. This has nothing to do with due diligence and is unfortunately one of those tragic things that happens in life and may not be explainable, preventable, or understandable.

My heart goes out to his family and friends.
