Worst D in college football

Post by BGSUBuckeye »

Don’t get me wrong…I love the Falcons just as much as the next guy, but we have one of the worst Ds in all of college football. I know everyone says we are under sized, but I’m sorry the past 2 games have been against 2 small schools. I also know that are “O” struggled on Thursday, but when you know that you have to go out every game and score 50+ points to win…that makes it kind of hard. It seems like to me that we just have no heart on “D.” If I was Jacobs, I would get the defense together and tell them to get their S*@! together!! If we can’t stop Temple next Sat. we are going to end the season below 500.

Agreed for the most part -- but did we really need another thread about how bad our defense is?

I refuse to let the offense off the hook for a poor performance based solely on the defense. Absolutely no excuse for 6 yards in one quarter. It is a team game and it needs to be fixed on both sides of the ball and on special teams. This team needs to think like a team and stop with the us/them offense/defense finger pointing if we want to get back to dominance.

Have you watched all (or even most) of the other defenses in college football?

I have not watched even half of the defenses in college football. But I can say that we might have the worst tackling front 7 I've ever seen in my lifetime of watching football. That is what's most disturbing. A scheme change or new defensive playcall is not going to make the guys tackle better. They have GOT to hit, wrap up, and drive through the ball carrier.

These are fundamental things that are taught in Jr. High football, and you should have them mastered by this point in your career. If our first guys to the scene would actually wrap up the ball carrier our defense would actually not be too terrible. I'd have to re-watch the film, but it is my impression that we are giving up at least 5-10 yards, on average, after contact.

Actually, I have ESPN gameplan so I have seen all of the schools that are big time programs, or wanting to be big time programs, play defense. We are not good, and I think that hammb put it best for use.

Hambb has a good point, but I'd like to add that although tackling is important, the defender has to get to the ball carrier first................I've never in my 35 years of watching college football seen a defense as inept at getting to the ball carrier as the Falcons of 05. Of course, based on Hambb's observations, that might be merciful, since they can't tackle once they do get there. The whole question about size is silly. We don't need bigger players, we need players with an attitude, players that arrive with bad intentions.....I don't see that in most of this group. Our linemen are coached to open things up for the LB's. The LB's almost invariably are picked off or caught up in the wash..........offensive linemen reaching our 2nd level so easily makes me wonder what the LB's are reading.

I asked the question because people love to get on this board and make sweeping claims. I'm just trying to learn the basis for their claims. For example, Newbie writes that s/he has never in her/his "35 years of watching college football seen a defense as inept at getting to the ball carrier as the Falcons of 05." I don't know if s/he is referring to D-1 only or all levels of college football. Also, I don't know how much college football s/he watches. I can't dispute her/his claim since I don't know what teams s/he has seen play, but, assuming s/he has seen a good deal of ball, the statement strikes me as hyperbolic.

FWIW, our defense is statistically at 111 out of 117 in total yards. That places us behind such defensive luminaries as Temple, San Jose State and Louisiana-Monroe.

Well, then.............let me be more anecdotal in nature. I have NOT seen every college football game ever played, but my personal experience is such that I've never seen a defense more inept than ours. Of course, being only my personal experience, it may differ somewhat from that of others. Now, at the risk of speaking in metaphors, let me say that this defense SUCKS.

I'm not even going to touch that justification. Weak, dude. Super hella weak.

The problem, it seems, is that you mustn't have seen much MAC football over the years...or Sunbelt, or other "non-BCS" conference, or Duke, or Baylor (they are much better this year), etc.

I think many teams this weekend would love to score 20 points...I may be wrong. Ask Iowa State if they are going to hang their offensive coordinator for only having 7 points at half-time of their game against Army tonight.

If I was going to classify something as the worst in the country, I would definitely choose our kicking game.
