Next years DL. Will it be even smaller?

Post by Germainfitch1 »

2006 DL

I was taking a look at next years DL hoping for some kind of improvement so that we don't get run all over by the Buckeyes and Badgers and so on and so forth. I don't really see that improvement happening.

A look at next years DL.
DE Devon Parks, 6-3 239 Sr.(next season) will maintain his end position with good reason. Through 3 games he has 16 tackles one for loss. He needs to get into the backfield more and add to his career 15 sacks.
DL Brad Williams, 6-3 256 Sr. Williams will likely be a starter, but where? Undersized for DT but has experience playing there as a Sophomore. With BG losing both Thaler and Cooley to graduation he may be forced inside. Willimas currently has 15 tackles and 2 for loss.
DT Nick Davis, 6-3 280 So. Davis is currently backing up Monte Cooley but has recorded 12 tackles 1.5 for loss. Davis is 10 pounds heavier than Monte Cooley, a fact that may help down the road.
DE Brandon Mack, 6-5 257 Jr. Currently absent fromt he two deep Mack still leads the Falcons with 2 sacks in the first 3 games. He has 6 total tackles. Mack, Briggs or Schaeffer are the most likely to be ready by next year which would likely move Williams back to DT. Williams move would make us 15 pounds lighter on the inside.
DE Dyrail Briggs, 6-4 216 So. Has 6 tackles and a costly penalty
DE Joe Schaeffer, 6-4 247 So. Has 6 tackles as well.
DT Brandon Curtis, 6-2 276 So. Has 5 tackles on the year. His rise may be most important. If he can start at one of the DT's it will actually make us bigger going into next year.
DL Trevor Frericks 6-2 260 So. True Freshman Frericks is the only other Falcon DL with a tackle. A tackle for loss for that. Very interesting what they see in him to bring him in and give up a year of elegibility. Could be a big time sleeper.

The rest of the DL:
DL Thomas Smith 6-0 269 Sr. Depth from Senior next year
DE Don Sprenkel 6-2 241 So.
DL: Micheal Ream 6-3 235, Thomas Jones 6-3 255, Duane Miller 6-0 234, Jacob Harwick 6-3 260, Brady Mintrum 6-4 250, Grant Hartrung 6-1 230 All Freshman likely being redshirted.

I'm too concerned with 2005 to think about the 2006 season.

I do apologize with my forward thinking on this. As a Bengals fan I am used to getting into next year mode very early. For those who are not interested in this topic yet please forgve me. All others please provide insight, input and interest.

No actually you bring up some good points Germain. As fans we do a little looking forward. Parks I think is up to 252lbs now , so our DE's have pretty decencty size comparable to alot of other teams. The inside linman is what we worry about most. With Thaler and Cooley gone we got MAJOR holes to fill. I'm thinking Nick Davis and Brandon Curtis must be take over the DT spots. They both need to gain a good 15-20lbs. We also need to recruit a DT for once in the offseaon. The last 2 recruiting seasons we have not gone after a typical obvious DT recruit. This last recruiting year we some guys that look like they project as DE's like this Trevor Fredricks and Thomas James who is supposesd to be very athletic and quick. Sor for next year we will have no real DT upperclassmen besides Davis and Curtis and the very undersized Thomas Smith. So unless some of these redshirted freshman DE sized guys go nuts with the weight gain to become DT's , we will be very undermanned at that position. The slight possible return of Leineger per Falcon Freak is also in the mix , but who knows.

BO, no offense, but what's happened to you lately man? You seem to be the unoffical Falcon football apologist. Most of the last few posts I have seen have all been complaining about how bad of fans some of these people are. So, we all have to agree that the Falcons are fantastic and wonderful and that we are God's gift to the game of college football?

I think he's just to the point where I am that even as shitty as things have looked on the field in parts of our first three games, what's the use in being the first one off the cliff? Or why cash in the whole season? While it's true that "true fans" should be upset when teams come out looking as flat as we have at times or whatever, I think it's also 100% true that a "true fan" knows when to turn off the hate and look forward to how things may improve. We all wait too long for football season to get here, now we're all in a hurry for it to get over, it seems. Everyone wants to outdo the other guy with negativity, get their "I told you so's" in and be the loudest one to speak out against the team. Where is the "being a fan" in that? We're all disappointed, some people around here really need to STFU and be happy when Saturdays get here. Before long it's going to be January and football will be a long 8 months away again. (Of course by then, there's still a good two months of "we hate the basketball team" left, but that's another story for another month.)

what he said.

There's nothing worse that I told you so's from your own camp. Nobody cares if you (not directed at anyone in particular) were right about us losing -- you sound like a douche -- shut up and move on.

The part that irks me a bit is that it's saturday and people still be griping. I'm all for a little griping after the game, but make your peace and move on to the next game please. Nobody wants to see anybody make the same negative comments over...and over.....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over again.

Wow. Thanks TG! I could not have said it better myself!

I haven't been trying to tell anyone that they are a bad fan. I really don't think that we have any "bad" fans, just a whole lot of people right now who have driven over a cliff into an irrational abyss. Yeah, the game this team played a few days ago sucked. But, there are more chances for this team to improve throughout the season, and no one wants to give them the credit of having that capability. People can say all they want about the coaches, but to say things like "We'll be lucky to win four games this year!" or "This team can't improve because they've only gotten worse in three games" is crossing that line of benig a fan and ammounts, in my mind, to attacks on the student athletes who are out there fighting the butts off no matter what any of us thinks. I really don't think that people are aware of what they are doing right now.

Thats all.
