Looking back on the season so far I have a couple observations I wanted to share. As we know there are 3 aspect to any football game. Offense, defense and special teams. For the past several seasons BG has been a team built primarily on offense and solid special teams. Our defense has never been the strength of this team. BG was successful because the offense outscored the opposition, special teams was a plus, and the defense was just good enough to allow BG to win most games.

This year we have been living or dying soley on our offense. The defense, with the exception of the Ohio game, has been a real problem. Special teams have been too pitiful to mention. We either win or lose based upon what the offense is able to do. Once the non conference schedule was over we had the same record as last year, 1-2, with a very favorable schedule leading up to the Miami and Toledo games. We should have won them all but we did not. What happened?

Simple, we lost Omar Jacobs and things began to unravel. Once Omar went down BG had no one to turn too. The defense and special teams have been negatives all season and the offense, behind a freshman quarterback sputterred and stalled. BG lost 2 games everyone expected them to win. Now they face a must win at Kent and tough games against Miami and Toledo. I believe the team had placed so much of it's confidence in Omar that when he went down the confidence of this team went with him. What can still happen. If BG wins at Kent and Omar returns for Miami and Toledo, the emotional impact of those events may be enough to BG to an East title. That is my hope. One thing for sure the MVP of this team is Omar Jacobs, hands down.
