The tiebreaker procedure came for the 2002-2003 MAC Handbook for Sports Operating Procedures. It's possible these rules have changed, but the MAC has not posted anything more recent that I could find. You are correct in your assertion that the tiebreaker procedure was written for determination of a MAC champion, but it is written for the case where the MACC could not be played for some reason. However, it is equally applicable to selection to play in the MACC representing each division. This is written in a section of the handbook that I left out in my previous post. Here is the write up for divisional champ tiebreaker:

B. Divisional Champions
The divisional championship shall be decided on conference winning percentage. If two or more teams are tied for the championship, they shall be considered divisional co-champions. The MAC tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine which team will represent that division in the MAC Championship game.

Hence, refer to the tie-breaking formula is what I posted previously.

I thought they got a chicken, a Tic-Tac-Toe board, and just let nature decide?

Under "MAC Compliance", MAC Championships Part I (pdf).

Tie Breaker Procedures
1. Head to head competition.
2. Winning percantage versus ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division; vs common opponents, regardless of number of times played.)
3. Sport specific component (if applicable).
4. Coin flip.

Don't know for sure if there is a "sport specific component" for football. I looked at the Football section on the handbook and the Championship guide but did not see anything. If there was, I think it would be something like mentioned earlier in this thread. That is, like the team that went to a bowl game most recently is eliminated or the coaches in the league vote on the representative for the MACC game based on how the teams are playing at the end of the season.

That's the way I understood "sport specific component" too. The football section of the handbook restates the general tiebreaker procedure that Warthog posted along with the additional options I posted previously. I took these additional football specific tiebreakers as the "sport specific component", which I assume would come before the coin flip option.

If BG, UT, and NIU were tied, the first tie-breaker would be to eliminate the most recent divisional winners in order. That would give NIU the title and berth in a championship game. Both BGSU and UT have been in the title game more recently than NIU.
