A few positives for Brandon

Post by 1987alum »

I know it is quite popular to bash Brandon today, but I wanted to point out a few positives.

 The brown unis. It was a cool move and I love that he tied it into the history of BG winning MAC titles while wearing brown uniforms. I love little stuff like that.

 The playbook. Many of us had suspected that Brandon was keeping certain pages of the playbook under wraps just for this game. Sure enough, we saw several wrinkles that seemed to catch Toledo off guard. In particular, the bootleg with Omar was sweet and changing direction on the shotgun off tackle worked really well.

 The playbook II. Tough to tell watching the Falcons on TV here and there, but it looked like the defense switched things up a bit last night, too. Jordan seemed to be lining up as a nickel back or some sort of spy. I'd need to be able to watch more film to be sure, but it looked like we tried a few new things on defense.

Kenny Lewis is the nickel back and we ran nickel on 95% of third downs last night. It looked like the DBs were playing zone and the safeties were thinking the DBs were playing man on nearly every third down.

Jelani was blitzing quite a bit last night, but rarely did it flush Gradkowski, much less produce any type of significant result.

See my 'hidden play' thread for my thoughts on blitzing a DB on thrid and long.

I wish we'd learn that the backside pursuit needs to stay home against UT. Every year they kill us with at least one play that features Brucie lobbing a wounded duck back over the top of our pursuit for big yardage.

Amen, Flipper. I thought the exact same thing. That throw back screen to the TE has killed us two years in a row.

I hate to say this but I can't believe that Urban would have lost 3 home games this year
