OK, another scenario, this time with a poll

Post by 1987alum »

There are only two choices here, so don't try to weasel out of making a pick!

Hypotheticals for 2006...

SCENARIO 1
BG gets swamped in all four OOC games, but manages a 5-3 MAC record. Once again, it's up to tiebreakers to determine the MAC East champ and BG comes out on top. At 5-7, they go to the MACC game and pull out a thin victory. They end the year at 6-7 and MAC Champions. However, they are not bowl-eligible and fail in their efforts to petition the NCAA to grant a waiver and do not go to a bowl.

SCENARIO 2
BG pulls of upsets against Wisky and Ohio State on its way to a 4-0 OOC record. They lose only one MAC game - and incredible 5 OT loss to a Top 25 Miami squad. Sadly, Miami goes undefeated in the MAC and, thus, wins the MAC East title; the Redskins go on to win the MAC title. BG does not play in the MACC game, but does manage to finish the season in the top 10 and lands an at-large BCS Bowl bid.

IMO, a BCS bid is worth infinitely more to the program than what a MAC Championship is. Do you know what $14 mil could build?

I don't think one loss would get us into the BCS, even if Miami was undefeated as well. Miami would certainly go to the BCS, but for us to go it would mean that both at-large bids would have to come out of the MAC. That being said, it would be extremely cool if we went! Id go to Miami or Tempe in January!

It would build a lot more than 14 mil split 12 ways.

A cool thought, but we could beat every team we play by 30 points and still be out of the top 10 with a close loss. No MAC team will ever get an at-large BCS bid without going undefeated and having a lot of help.

That's why it's a hypothetical!

To expand on this scenario ... what if BG was the only loss for Ohio State, Wisky and Boise State? Let's say Toledo flirts with the top 25 before we beat them in November? Our SOS would look pretty darn good then.
