Brandon year end press conference

In fairness, he said in his comments he said that he wants to recruit character guys, but new recruiting rules limit the amount of time you can spend with a young man prior to him signing. I don't know about the veracity of that, but if you want his entire statement in context, that's it.

Brandon has said in the past that in 2003 he had less than four weeks to fill 20+ scholarships. As a result, they took a chance on a number of kids.
Guys with talent like Robinson, Thurman. Browning and the rest didn't pan out. I'd rather go high risk/reward in that case than go after guys with demonstrably less talent and fewer offers who looked safe.

Following that line, you have to figure that even if they flame out, you'll have that schollie to offer the next year when you actually have time to recruit.

You also have to remember where we were in 2000. We were a program that didn't have a full allotment of 75 scholarship athletes (some schollies were used on grad assistants!) or a full roster of 105 players. Urban Meyer and co then ran off 20 or so kids who decided they were too soft for the program. That didn't leave much behind to work with in terms of depth.

Now we're in a position to actually let freshmen sit for a year or two before we throw them out there....unless they force the issue by playing lights out football in practice.

I have a problem with the whole "character" comment. Are we missing out on talent because of this pre-judging? Sometimes coaches with this mentality don't give guys a fair chance and make poor assumptions about what a guy is going to do and how a guy is going to mature. Not to bring up Meyer again, but Meyer recruited talent and brought them in and made them understand if their character screwed with his program, they were out. Guess what, they conformed to his rules.

I have a problem with the whole "character" comment. Are we missing out on talent because of this pre-judging? Sometimes coaches with this mentality don't give guys a fair chance and make poor assumptions about what a guy is going to do and how a guy is going to mature. Not to bring up Meyer again, but Meyer recruited talent and brought them in and made them understand if their character screwed with his program, they were out. Guess what, they conformed to his rules.

I understand what your concern is here, but in all honesty, I would have to believe that Brandon goes after talent when and if it's available. I can't see him not offering a 5 star recruit that's interested anytime soon even if his character is somewhat questionable. This comment from Brandon (in my opinion) seemed to be one of those lines you throw out there for everybody to pin to their shirt and be proud of. As far as chances go, I think Brandon is more than fair and wants to give his kids every opportunity to come back and do the right thing. A great example of this will be if that LB from Michigan is allowed to come back and play next season. What was his name again...and isn't he currently still enrolled at BG?

Brandon seems to like kids who's dad coached football and who have played in winning programs in high school...at least that's the general stuff that's stressed at the signing day presentations.

I would encourage those who can make the trip into BG on a weeknight to attend the signing day receptions. You get a detailed look at the recruiting class and you can glean some really interesting information from the coaches about what traits they look for in players. At the mid major level, you're often looking at guys with certain physical qualities that you can develop (unlike OSU or Michigan who signan ass load of kids who can and often do step in right away).

Why would he want kids who know more than he does? Is he looking for advice from the dads or the kids?

The LB from Michigan is Nick Lawrence. He had his schollie pulled after his legal issues but was permitted to walk on. #52. He is on the active roster.

Given the way the Rockettes have fared againt good OOC teams, I wouldn't be too excited about another trip to the woodshed either...
