Re: Transfer Portal 2024-25
Now we’ll see how many players enter the portal… I would assume quite a few more will do so. I’m pretty connected to the NIL landscape at BGSU, so I hear different figures of what players are offered/take.
- As I stated earlier, Wollschlaeger received around $500K to go along with his choice of a living space.
- Stewart received slightly more up front, but did not get the same additional benefits as Wollschlaeger did.
I know this is a football thread, but there are numbers from other sports that put NIL into a bigger perspective, for better or worse.
- Marcus Hill from the basketball team was offered $800K from Kansas. It was rumored that he didn’t want to play with Wisconsin transfer AJ Storr (who went to Kansas). I would assume he received around $800K to go to NC State.
- Agee was offered $700K, a loaned vehicle, and complimentary travel for his family for all home games.
On the women’s basketball side, both Lexi Fleming and Amy Velesco were offered north of $200K to transfer to the Big10 after the 2022-23 season and the 2023-24 season.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask and I’ll answer it to the best of my knowledge.

It does, Flip...and that is the worst part for me. It isn't nearly as fun as it was 20 years or even 10 years ago. I love Falcon Football to death but every passing year, the sport as a whole get less and less interesting. Now the "Power 5" is the "Power 4". F off...

I don’t blame the players for taking the money where they can get it.
I blame the system. There are no rules. It’s impossible.

I've never been in with the "We need to bail on FBS and go to FCS" crowd, but I'm there now. The way the "haves" have engineered this system to feed all the talent to them is ridiculous. Only the super rich programs can truly compete. It has ruined the game for me. I watched the FCS semi finals and it was great - so much more entertaining. It's still about the football for the players instead of being about the money, although those programs are also feeling the effects of being raided by FBS programs that throw NIL money at their best players, so it's not possible to entirely get away from it. That said, we are trying to stay in an arms race by only having access to sticks and rocks when the competition has guided missles.

Re: Transfer Portal 2024-25
I would love to FBS go to an English Football Pyramid set up and create 4 or 5 tiers of leagues consisting of 32 teams. Let the big boys have their Premier Division where all the big $$$ is. BG would probably fit in the lower end of the 3rd tier, higher end of the 4th. The games would be better across the board. Have promotion and relegation so if the Boise States of the football world want a chance to play with the big boys they could do it on merit.
There also needs to be rules about when a team can come in and poach a head coach. What happened to Marshall... not a huge fan of Marshall, mind you... but what happened to them this season stinks. Lose a coach. Lose 25 of your players and the rest get screwed out of a bowl experience. That has to change.
Also, these big schools who swoop in and poach players should have to pay a fee for them. The OL player of ours who went to Kentucky... let Kentucky pay BG a fee for him.
It'll never happen but still...

When it gets to the point where we are paying salaries to the players, then we can have them sign contracts that lock them in and include buyout, like coach contracts.JD-Class of 90' wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 3:36 pm I would love to FBS go to an English Football Pyramid set up and create 4 or 5 tiers of leagues consisting of 32 teams. WNBA doesn’t pay players 200k. No way average basketball players are getting that.bghkyfan74 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 27, 2024 9:44 am Now we’ll see how many players enter the portal… I would assume quite a few more will do so. Zero chance either were offered anywhere near 200k. No way that amount of money is in play at MAC level of women’s basketball. Less than zero percent chance Fleming was offered that coming off major surgery. Figures on men’s side seem possible although I had heard Agee was closer to 400k.daspollak wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2025 1:22 pmWNBA doesn’t pay players 200k. Brennan Ridley, WR from Hampton has committed. 50 receptions for 596 yards and 4 TDs as a freshman. He was nominated for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the top FCS freshman.
