Why? Make it the ticket to get. Keep the seating capacity where it is at.

Damn right I'm not leaving the south end zone for a football game. Even against Minnesota.

Were you not here when Pitt came in? I think it was Blackney's last year (2000).

We got steamrolled. I think it was 34-3 at one point, before we scored some garbage points. They had Antonio Bryant (who won the Biletnikoff that year) running wild in our secondary. They also had Kevan Barlow & Nick Goings, but we didn't do a bad job stopping the run. It was Bryant's 9 catches for 180 yards that really caused us problems.

That was the game after we had to try and cover the UM WR corps of David Terrell & Ron Bellamy. I believe we started two FR or SO CBs back then too, so I felt pretty bad for those guys. Welcome to D1A guys :)

Now enough talk about that part of our past :(

This would be a great get for BG. While Pitt & Mizzou were BCS opponents, it's not nearly the same as bringing in a Big 10 foe. We are in Big 10 country, whether we want to admit it or not, and bringing in a team like Minny will garner us a lot more respect than either of those opponents would...of course we'll have to win :)

Holy crap this is good news.

I'm surprised BGSU didn't make a big show of announcing this.

I was here, but I'll take Minnesota over Pitt every time. Same deal with Mizzou. Mizzou and Pitt are about equal in my mind. Maybe it's just because I follow the B11 more, but I associate Minny with better football than Mizzou and Pitt.

BIG 10 - MAC agreement

Post by Class of 61 »

I believe what we're seeing here is the result(beginning?) of the purported agreement between the Big 10 and the MAC to schedule "regularly" games against each other, now that the 12 game schedule is at least "permanently" in effect.... recall something to that effect was in the works last year, just never heard any specifics about it later on.... but I'm looking forward to this.... as I mentioned in the other thread re: MAC schools "hosting" Big 10's, we'll HAVE to do something to increase our seating beyond the 24K level if we expect other teams to come here.... Think about the NIU "gameday" experience of a couple of years ago..... or the 33K+ BG vs. UT of eons ago.... (yes, I was there...before some of you guys were born!?)

Maybe it's because we haven't secured rental of Cleveland Browns Stadium yet. Or maybe they are playing Western Kentucky? Just my subtle negativity again.

Shortsighted - NO. There is no need to put in more seats into the Doyt just because of one game a season. We don't fill up the place now as it is. I say keep the seating where it is at and when we bring in the teams that people want to see, let them pay to see those teams. Make it the ticket to get. Contrary to popular belief (or the belief of TU fans in Lucas County) you do not need to have a stadium of 30,000+ seats to be able to enjoy a football game.

Selfish - NO.
Sarcastic - Most definitely.

Is it even a given that this would be a sell-out? Would this game attract more people than the Toledo game? How well does Minnesota travel?

A smaller capacity leads people to buy season tickets to keep from being shut out, which is good for the overall program. I like the strategy.

I'd rather have 2,000 empty seats than 12,000 empty seats.

Has BG ever hosted a Big Ten team in the Doyt?

I can't believe I have to argue this point, but...

Why would a BGSU v. Minnesota game at the Doyt draw more than 24,000? Let me count the ways...

1) Look at the date. Sept. 6. How many times have the AZZers lamented the fact that BG doesn't have any early home games (or early "good" home games). Remember, there were 23,000 + at the freakin' SE Missouri St. game in 2004. Why? Good weather and...

2) It will, likely, be the first home game. That usually means increased attendance.

3) Minnesota would, probably, bring more fans than our opponents usually do.

4) It is Minnesota, a Big Ten team. This is the type of opponent that will draw the casual BGSU "fan".

Remember, there were over 31,000 at the NIU game. Yes, Gameday was there. But, this Minnesota game would approach that in hype.
