LB and WR are the two spots I think true freshmen have a real chance to make an impact (along with Young at DT and Big Bird and Rojas). There was some talk that Mahone will play WR and Pronty, Davis and Charles are all burners. Brighton looks good too, although he seems like more a short/intermediate type guy than a deep threat.

That Magnone kid from Steubenville could get some time at LB too along with Jackson and Fells.

Briggs broke his foot this winter when he slipped and fell. He is not participating in Spring drills.

He slipped and fell but won't have his playing time threatened by Eugene Fells...Hopefully Coach Lovett can keep everything straight.

I was a little disappointed to see Rhett Magner's name absent from the WR remarks.

y are u dissapointed to not see magners name up there. he's 5-9 160 maybe 5-10 and thats a big maybe. I'm actually relieved that he isnt up there otherwise I would think we are in big trouble at WR. Like I've said before Brantley is sweet he just needs to stay healthy and I'm very anxious to see Aaron Davis play in the spring game, from what I hear he's a freak just like chuck was but is a very raw talent. I was just thinking the other day what if Luke Alexander hadn't failed out of school, he woulda helped out a lot this year.

Mike Ream and Chris Wright live right down the hall from me. Ream is a BIG dude with a mean temper when he is provoked. He will be a really big part of the defensive line soon. Chris is an outstanding d-back and we can expect him to help out a lot in the secondary this year until he takes over a permanent role back there in the next couple years.

A couple of kids who weren't mentioned in the article are two other guys on my floor: Cody Basler and Trevor Frericks are two huge linebackers who should be exciting to see some decent play in the interior next year. From what other guys on the team tell me, Cody is a monster hitter which is something this defense really needs, and Trevor swallows up blocking o-lineman on every play. I can't wait to see those two get some time on the field, and they are both itching for the chance.
Yeah right girl!

Whoa whoa whoa. "Aaron Davis is a freak like Chuck"?? You have got to be kidding. The kid is nothing like chuck. The kid had like 19 career receptions in high school. He was brought in because he is a very good blocker. He is still learning how to catch the ball and run routes. None of the WR are burners by any means. This might be the slowest WR in the nation. However, they will get better and once they learn the offence they will be pretty good. You have to keep in mind that there is no leaders on the entire WR class and we are counting on 5th year seniors that havent showed ANYTHING in 4 years and shouldnt be expected to show us anything now. The 4 freshman coming in will be fighting for starting spots and will be here all summer with the team. Rhett Magner wasnt mentioned because he is hurt. He sprained his ankle and I believe broke his thumb. Before that he was actually doing very well, moving up the depth chart into the 2nd string "H" spot behind Partridge who is having a horrible spring.

he didn't have that many receptions because they were a running team and only threw the ball maybe 5-10 times a game. All I was saying is that he has similar athletic ability to Chuck.

The way he ran on his recruiting video reminded me of Chuck a bit.

I went and watched practice today. The 2 starting corners if they can keep it together will be the best 2 corners we have ever had here at BG. Pete Winovich is a beast at FB and he finally found a home there. They have 3 personell packages just for him. Aaron Davis doesnt have a 1/3 the athletic ability as Chuck by the way. Other than that the WR core looked sloppy lots of dropped balls and poor blocking. Cole Magner was there helping them out too. Apparently he was just in town for the weekend to visit the MRS. Also definatley our strength for the next couple years will be the O-line who look very good. However, from what I gather they wont be running the ball as much as people think come the fall.

Aaron Davis doesn't have 1/3 the athletic ability of Chuck? Now that is a shock and big big disapointment if true. From what I've gathered this kid is supposed to be quite fast and athletic. Not to mention this kid's from Florida too, I've never heard of a slow wr from Florida never thatss playing D-1 football.

Interesting.....I thought Trevor Fredricks might be a DE but linebacker for his size actually sounds awesome. I think Fredricks goes about 6'2 and 250.Hope he's got the quickness and the sound tackling we need at all linebacker positions.

Maybe we should see how it turns out.

I find the athleticism comment interesting, because it sounded like the kid was a pretty good athlete in the recruiting stuff that I remember from him. What's more with the workouts and stuff it kinda turned out that Chuck wasn't that great of an athlete, certainly not elite. One thing I always liked about Chuck was his body control when jumping, the kid could go get a ball. His catch at Purdue is still my favorite BG play of all time.

You aren't kidding, Hammb. That play NEVER gets old. One of the greatest catches ever.

Well, I have heard it is off and on this spring. He has had some good scrimmages and some bad practices. But Coach Brandon had some good things to say.

One point that is not known is Corey is still not 100% from last season. Something him and I are working on. Hopefully we can get him to a point where he can play close to 100% this season, time is not on our side.

Also, I guess it is a good thing I didn't order my brown jersey yet. Seems my crazy kid is switching numbers on me. Corey is now going to be #1.

This was on the MAC board...thought it might be valid in this thread...enjoy!

I had the opportunity to work/officiate a BG scrimmage this past weekend - here is a qucik update.

First off, the scrimmage at Doyt-Perry Stadium was moved to their indoor practice facitly due to cold and wet conditions at the field. The downside is they ran a lot of 7 on 7 and 9 on 9 drills rather than a traditional game like practice.

When I officate, it's difficult to see the whole field since I look primarily at one player or one area. I did take some notes though and noticed a few stand out players. Overall, I thought the offense was way ahead of the defense.

The young QBs look pretty good and each can run well. I would guess that these guys will 'tuck and duck' a lot more than Omar Jacobs this fall.

The RBs were very solid and quite fast. Dan macon & Chris Bullock did very well and I noted #34 - who is a guy named Curtis VanDemark on the roster, as a big and strong back.

Receivers, #80, Ruben Ruiz, a converted TE, really did a good job as a big slot back. He has to be in the 240-pound range and looks like Tony Gonzalez of the KC Chiefs.

The offense line is really big - I noted #61, a guy named Kevin Mahoney, as a big kid who can pound the defense.

Defensively I did not notice any player who made any big plays, but the speed looked pretty good from the DBs.

Finally, former Colorado coach Gary Barnett was there watching the practice. I guess he hired Gregg Brandon for his first coaching job years ago and they still stay in touch.
