It may not even be just knees. My husband said he gave up the dream of playing in the NFL after seeing some of the best players he knew going in the 6th or 7th round in the draft, and never making it on an NFL team. Sure, it's a nice idea, but it's a lot harder than it looks.TG1996 wrote:Yeah, thinking back, that was alot of the story I heard (aside from the knees being the reason to stop playing... I thought it odd that such a good OL would give up like that, but now it makes perfect sense)... Just that he started eating like a normal human being and his weight went down.Falconballer wrote:Yeah Rob has lost about 70lbs. He had no intentions of playing due to all his knee problems. He says he is feeling alot better. He is down to a healthier weight. You have to understand that some of these guys really have to eat and eat and eat to maintain their playing weight. He said it wasnt healthy, and now he has lost it by pretty much giving up fast food.

I know this name is probably too unfamiliar to you "younguns" on the board, but many years ago I had the chance to meet Dick Schafrath, former Browns left tackle for many years.
I was surprised to see that , despite our height differences, our weight was about the same (at that time in the 235 range or so). He told me he literally had to "force feed" himself to get to a playing weight of 270+, which was the going rate for OT's in those days. So I'm not radically surprised when one of these modern era guys drops a lot of weight after their careers are over. And the term "healthy weight" ,mentioned previously, mkes a lot of sense to me.

Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
while i may be a "youngun," the senator's name is not unfamiliar to me. i went to high school with three of his grandsons (in a familty of five boys), and two of them were in the band with me at Hoover, and i'm still close with the eldest three boys. i, too, had the chance to meet him, and, many years past his playing days, he's not as big as one might think. i also had the fortune of being well acquainted with another 60s Browns lineman (and, of course, kicker). lou groza was a friend of my grandfather's (and great uncle) having all grown up in martins ferry, and, two his grandkids also went to high school with me at Hoover. i woudl frequently see lou at mass on sundays with his son jeff and his family. even late in his life, lou was a monster of a man. as a septagenarian, he looked as though he could still play on an o-line.
groza it seems to me is not the norm. having for many years seeing so many of these linemen up close at HOF events (mayor's breakfasts, enshrinees' dinners, etc.), many of these guys, while still having huge frames, are not the huge specimens that you see in their playing days.

Seriously, cool stories! I was watching the Jim Brown "Beyond the Glory" last night during my dinner break... his moves on the playing field still amaze me. (His moves *off* the playing field still annoy me sometimes.)

yeah, talk about poor wording. groza was a classmate of my great uncle and friend of my grandfather. don't forget that martins ferry is on the ohio, and directly across the river from wva.TG1996 wrote:Your grandfather is your great uncle!?!?!jacojdm wrote: lou groza was a friend of my grandfather's (and great uncle)I do NOT want to see the rest of your family tree...

although it's interesting that you point out my grammatical faux pas. my great grand father is, in fact, my great uncle. my great grandmother married a guy in italy, moved to america, and had two kids (including my grandfather). he was killed in WWI. his brother then came over after the war, married her, and had four more kids.

Rob Warren.......
I'm very surprised to hear that Rob has given up on football. I really thought he had alot of potential as a NFL OT somehwere. I don't realize that his knees were that bad. He wasn't even that thick weight wise at 6'6 and 290 for offensive lineman.

No idea what you're even talking about.
I'm not as cool as Tony Gaver, nor will I ever be.

You know I think Cleveland...my second Favorite NfL team...i think they are now honestly loaded to a point where they will I think be in a position in the playoffs this year. Its wierd but when I read thier roster and see who they have picked up, it just all looks good..and I never thought this way about the browns...they normally pick good people that dont fit...I dont see it that way this year...wierd.
