Yep...all 6'-2" and roughly 200 lbs of Aaron Davis was at LB. I recall that he laid a great block on some hapless kid during his hilight video from 2005's signing day. It looks like he's not afraid to hit someone.

That #86 is a very fast kid...

Holy crap! These kids are good!
Your QB gets sacked on third down out by the pro shop at the golf course and that's gonna come in handy!

hammb wrote:Flipper must've been watching the QBs different than me. I didn't think any of them looked particularly accurate when throwing without defenses, but I put way more stock in how they looked in 11 on 11.

In 11 on 11 drills I thought all the African American QBs looked pretty poor. Barnes looked especially bad. It wasn't so much that his throws sucked, it's that he didn't look comfortable running the offense. He was consistently a second or two late on making his reads, and almost looked afraid to throw the ball at times. Sheehan looked much more comfortable setting up and throwng than any of the other guys, IMO.

It is hard to get a real good guage for the team as a whole when the defense is letting up on QB pressure and they aren't really tackling.

It should also be noted that we're running some very strange formations this year. Most of the formations look like pro-style offensive sets but with the QB in shotgun like about 4 yards behind the LOS. This was unusual and different than what we've seen in the past, I think. We ran a lot of sets with a single tailback 7 yards deep (like you would in a standard one back), but the QB would be lined up at 3 deep...it really looked like a standard I formation, with nobody under center :) These formations may confuse some teams early, because I've never seen them. It was wierd to see a guy take a shotgun snap and still drop back a couple steps before setting up to throw.
The weird shotgot formation I believe I've seen in some playbooks of some teams in NCAA '07. Some of the pass happy teams like Texas Tech or Hawaii had some sorta of inbetween shotgun setup. The qb would be a little closer to the center than a normal shotgun so he would have to drop back a few steps or so. I don't remember seeing it but I wasn't paying that close attention to the formations.

It was hard for me to tell what Qb's were doing well or not. Not alot of passing drills with db's on the wr's so that doesn't help. Barnes is one quick and shifty guy though. The few times I saw Sheehan throw , his throws looked pretty good. Don't know much on Glaud cuz it was hard to tell him from Barnes with no numbers. Zach Charles #86 is pretty fast if I may say so. The linebackers seemed okay but I didn't watch real intently, but gosh everytime I look at Dozier all I can help but think is the first time a Wisky TE or FB goes block him its gonna be ugly. I know he hits like a ton of bricks but still he should be a saftey in my humble opinion.

I recall the depth chart had Aaron Davis at wr. Why the hell would he be at LB? Does he not have good enough hands or something and we now have to scrounge around for a place to put him so the customary shift to LB is in order? Put the dude at Saftey , thats what you do to a supposed wr that has great athletic talent but doesn't have wr hands.

I wasn't there today to see it for myself, but this "new formation" some of you are talking about, could it be a variation of the "pistol offense" that Nevada is running? Nevada's head coach Chris Ault is getting the credit for designing the offense and they did pretty well with it last year and are said to be running it much better in camp right now. It essentially has the QB lined up in a short dropback form (not as deep as a shotgun formation, hence, the reason it's called pistol) and he's usually joined by a TB that lines up in the backfield with him, sometimes even behind him. It's designed to get more out of the running game with the QB dropped back in a shotgun (or pistol in this case) set. Just wondering if this is what some of you saw today?

Like I said earlier, I'm just guessing on who the QBs were. I don't know any of them, and the only one I could positively identify was Sheehan, and obviously Hunter.

Perhaps a lot of the plays that I thought were Barnes were actually Glaud, I don't know for sure. I just know that I saw a LOT of indecisiveness from some of the QBs. There were also a lot of plays that would've been sacks in full speed football where the guys pulled up because of the no contact on QB stuff.

I just cannot wait to see them out there actually playing a real game and see what we've got. I'm glad that some of you guys saw things differently than I did, but I thought our passing game was definitely a work in progress.

Man, I thought last year was the last time we'd see that formation. I really dislike when we use it. We're nearly always getting the kick blocked and our punter is rushing like hell to get the kick off most of the time. I know we had a great punt return average in return on our punt team last year, something like 2.6, but I'd rather see us line up and protect our punter and kick the damn ball out of bounds than watch our punter fear for his life back there.

We even had some people who thought that Rojas had negotiated an end to the formation before coming here.

Exactly!!!! What are people talking about!!! Barnes looks like a different QB then the one i saw at the spring game. Barnes arm strength is much better and he was running offense like a leader. He threw a couple of nice strikes to our WRs. I think Barnes will be a solid backup and if turner fails, maybe the starter. I have already posted several times about Zach Charles, the dude is nasty. He made the all florida dream team and is our new playmaker aka mini charles sharon. I cant wait, we have one more week. Ill be first row in the DAWG POUND in Cleveland!!!

I basically agree with everyone's views here. It was tough to gauge things by the way the practice/scrimmage went. Macon is gonna rush for 1,000 yards this year...bank on that. Winny is gonna be a moose out of the backfield. The D looks quicker and was swarming to the ball...which is good. Antonio Smith had a huge hit on one play but, as Hammb pointed out correctly, didn't wrap up and take the player down. I think our O line will be one of the best in the MAC.

Big Bird? This kid can flat out kick the stuffing outta the ball. IMO, he had more than just a couple kickoffs go at least 5 yards deep into the end zone. If I'm Coach Brandon, I tell him to kick the ball into the end zone every time and make the other team start at the 20. Zach Charles is gonna be a special player. He's a baller....period. Can't wait to see him in the game. I agree with others about the coaches approach....VERY vocal, which is good. DJ Durkin is as intense as a coach as he was a player.

As far as the QB's? Hammb and I were at the top of the East side and it was tough to tell who was who. They looked OK...Sheehan looked good. They have work to do but the athleticism is there. Now they need to get the mental part of the game down. Great to see Marques Parks back on the field. Ruiz is faster having lost about 10-15 lbs. Corey Partridge and another player were basically running slow laps around the field and dling steps during the scrimmage. Very promising to see. I talked with Corey during the meet and greet and he is hoping to be back asap...but not gonna rush anything. Great seeing you too, Spart! BGSU 99 and 96 as well!
Flip, were you on the West side?? Didn't see ya there.

Finally got to meet Greg Christopher. Seems like a very nice guy and very approachable. Paul Krebs is a fine AD but seemed hard to approach at times. Greg is taking the bull by the horns and, I think, will do a great job. He asked lots of folks which logo they like best. He's asking questions to get info...good stuff. Thanks to Falcon Fanatic and BGFan for getting my new TG chair!!! IT IS THE BEST! Thanks Ranger Rocket for getting those! I suggest everyone get one but there is a tag on the chair that states a 225 lb. max. Good thing I'm at 219. LOL!

All in all it was fun to be back at the Doyt. The Sebo Center is gonna be an awesome structure when finished...very exciting stuff even with the delays. The new railings with the orange "BG"s on them look great. I saw them at the spring game but went down on the field for an up close look.

This is gonna be a great weekend. Friday we are taking the day off work and going to Cedar Point. Saturday? HELL YEAH!!!

GO FALCONS!!!! BEAT THE BADGERS!!!
