So... what's next for Urban??
I could see Urban making the jump to the NFL, because he will always be looking for the next Mountain (as somebody said). I'm not convinced he'll see success at the NFL level though. I love his intensity, but that is a schtick mostly reserved for the college game. The NFL is about the quality of your scheme and your ability to gameplan and attack the opposition's weakness.
Urban's scheme would NEVER work in the NFL. For that reason I think he would need to hire an experienced NFL OC to handle the offensive duties. As many of you recall when Urban was hired at BG he talked about the option -vs- the spread and trying to spread a defense horizontally. You cannot spread defenses horizontally in the NFL, they must be spread vertically to achieve success.
However, I think tonight showed an uncanny ability to taylor his overall scheme to the weaknesses of his opponent. His offensive gameplan was superb. Mixing the run with the pass, mixing formations. OSU's defense was confused all night, and as a result they played slower than they have all year...they were thinking, when they should've been acting.
I can see Urban making the leap, but he'll need a good offensive coordinator that he trusts to work with. Somebody with NFL experience. Personally, I'm not a real fan of college coaches making the leap to the NFL. Especially those without much NFL experience (does Urban have ANY?). The guy is a good enough coach he may be able to pull it off, but I'm leery of any college coach making that leap.
Oddly enough, I think Weiss would be a better NFL coach than college coach. He doesn't look like a special recruiter to me, and his teams don't play with the intensity of top notch college coaches. However, his schemes & gameplans are usually pretty good...he really looks like an NFL coach working in the college ranks.

I'm with hammb. Urban's style works much better in college. When he comes in and says "You better work your ass off or your off this team", college kids buy into that and perform. You try that in the NFL and half the players tell you to "Kiss my ass, and I will still be cashing the checks whether I listen to you or not". Not saying he couldn't be successful, but I just think he fits better as a collge coach, than as a pro. There is a reason why guys like Bobby Knight and Coach K never went to the NBA. I think the same applies to Meyer and the NFL.

I'd like to see him stay in college. Screw the No Fun League. College ball is where it's at. But that's me...UF should sign him to a 10 yr contract extension and give him DOUBLE what Bama gave Saban.
Congrats Urban and the Gators. Your gameplan and execution was flawless. And I won a pretty nice sum of jack as the college bowl pool champ! I was in first the whole bowl season and was one of 4 out of 67 to pick FLA. Thanks, Gators! CHOMP!

I think those guys style, except for maybe Vermeil, is a little different than Meyer's. They are tough, but you can also see that they are having some fun. Meyer always just looks pissed off no matter what is happening on the field.Flipper wrote:I don't think being tough hurt Bill Cowher, Jimmy Johnson or Dck Vermeil...well Vermeil was tough when he wasn't in tears...anyway, I think the challenge with professional athletes is being tough AND credible. I think Urban can pull that off
Now Vermiel seems closer to Meyer than the others. But his success in the NFL, with the Eagles especially, was a long time ago. I don't think the 'Me First' attitude of so many NFL players had infected too many players yet when he was with the Rams.

Yes, when I think Bill Cowher, I think now there is a guy who looks like he's having fun. Fun and Cowher almost seem completely synonymous.Warthog wrote:I think those guys style, except for maybe Vermeil, is a little different than Meyer's. Mr. Ball State Jason Whitlock wrote an entertaining article about Urban in the Kansas City Star.

I am no where near the college football expert that many of you are..... so here is my question with Meyer.
He has spent two years at three different schools. Using the talent provided, he has motivated the players to overachieve. He has moved before the overall picture of him as a College Coach can be analyized - No recruiting classes to review over the typical four year span, no follow-up sucess with the same program. He has not had to face adversity (down years) in any of the programs he has coached.
He certainly seems to be able to develop a game plan. He certainly can motiviate players to overachieve for a season or two. However...... Blackney (as one example) did the same, but in year four and following the wheels feel off. Tim Rose at Miami (OH) in the 1980's.... same thing. John Copper is another.
I'm curious to your thoughts. Or does he just have to keep jumping schools every couple of years for us all to think he is a genius?

Urban is a great coach...No Doubt. And maybe he can coach the the Pro level. However, I am tired of the Browns being the offical NFL Head Coach testing ground.
I want the Browns to entice someone that has some proven NFL coaching chops if/when they get a new HC. If they could entice Cowher out of retirement, that is what we need. I am not saying that Urban couldn't step-up to the challenge, but it seems like the Browns never get anyone with proven NFL credentials, so they are either to early in their NFL coaching career (see Bill Belichick) or they never pan out (See Bud Carson, Chris Palmer, or Butch Davis).

Meyer is not leaving for the NFL. He is as much a family man as he is a coach. The nfl season is much longer and requires much more preparation. Moreover, Meyer is hardcore on discipline and structure. Meyer and his system is built for college.
As for Notre Dame, I think time has started to tick for his position. If he cant win with Clausen in three years he may see his dream job given to Urban Meyer.

[I think he has one more thing to accomplish in college football and that is to come back to BG and win a MAC championship.]
Touche! Or is that Tushy!
Anyways, he's an amazing coach and he took one of the best big game coaches to the woodshed last night. Two years ago in Vegas, before the college season started I dropped $50 on Florida to win the BCS. Didn't make a trip this last year.
Congrats Urban! Now come back and win the MAC. Maybe after you win a Super Bowl!
