Ummm...I think the term "field turf" is meant generically to define a playing surface. The trademarked Field Turf is sold by Field Turf...I don't think we'd be taking bids on something limited to a single vendor (does Haliburton do this stuff?).
So...even though the budgetary parameters suggest fake stuff is on the way, we could still be playing on real grass next year. I mean, it's not like the bid specifically calls for a synthetic surface.......

I think there are multiple installers of Field Turf. The vendor just makes and helps the contractor with the install as part of the purchase of the product. Keep in mind they are looking for a GC (general contractor) for the full scope of work. That GC would sub-out the Field Turf install.
This is how it is usually done.

What sod do you know of that costs $1 million? When OSU had to rush to replace their sod it "only" cost $100,000.Flipper wrote:So...even though the budgetary parameters suggest fake stuff is on the way, we could still be playing on real grass next year. But they aren't just laying sod..they're doing installation and they're putting up a bunch of fences and goal posts. I recall reading ion this very forum that the drainage system was damaged during the construction of the Sebo Center. Maybe they have to do a lot of reconstruction.
I agree that the parameters suggest fake stuff....but that's a guideline for bidders. If a bidder comes in with grass and a rebuilt drainage system at $500,000 or less...who's to say they won't go with that? The project doesn't seem to mandate a synthetic surface....

You'll notice that the fencing and goal posts are listed separately from the field cost.Flipper wrote:But they aren't just laying sod..they're doing installation and they're putting up a bunch of fences and goal posts. I don't think there's anyway you're going to see a replacement of the drainage system costing $800,000.
Also, the bids are not for the actual cost of the product. It's a bid to work under the Contractor which means it's a bid for who will be doing the installation.

If this season is anything like last, I think that would be a good plan...Falcon52 wrote:OK. I may hate our schedule and may have sworn off all games this year and my season tickets, on another thread, but I will not be able to resist and will go to games, but only to see the turf and not the other teams.
I repeat, I'm only going to see the turf and our team. I will block out the opponent.
We are missing a great opportunity.
Never mind the color of the turf. We should make the entire field fiber optic, and plug it into a giant video card. We can go with a psychedelic turf!

Re: Field Turf is Coming!!!
Thanks for the heads up! I'm excited to see that we are finally replacing the playing surface at the Doyt. I have always enjoyed us playing on grass, but with the troubles we’ve experienced over the years with our field, I think it’s time to make the jump to turf like nearly all the other MAC schools have already, as well as many other Northern & Midwestern schools have as well. With that said, I hope we do this the right way and go with actual Field Turf (or a similar type of product/turf) like other MAC East schools have installed and not the type of junk that Toledo has. That would be a huge mistake. We can’t cut any corners on this project like we did on the videoboard. I mean, our video/scoreboard was an improvement, but the thing is way too small. It just seems it would have been better served to have spent the extra money on something bigger. None the less, let’s hope we go with a good surface.KeyWestParrot wrote:Last Friday's Sentinel-Tribune had an invitation to bid notice to put in Field Turf at Doyt Perry. I heard that work is to begin in early April.
Anyone else heard anything about this??
Think about some of the improvements to the Doyt. Permanent lights, new seats, new video/scoreboard, the Sebo Center, Field Turf, new fencing, landscaping, etc. Once all of this is finished, we’re going to be on par with some and better than others in terms of the top football facility in the MAC.
GO BG!!!
The stadium has taken on a really different feeling than it had even just a few years ago. Its, well, not the same. Better in many ways. But it has the feel of a work in progress. I'd really love to see big improvements in the concession stands. More banners, symbols of BGSU victory, TV monitors, modern things, all around the inside of the stadium complex.
