Other than the halftime adjustment thing, the coaching was top notch tonight. Brandon and his staff deserve a lot of credit for seemingly cleaning up the passing game and especially SPECIAL TEAMS!

Hopefully we see a lot more of what we saw tonight.

Actually, watching this game and thinking back to others, it became pretty clear to me that it isn't a motivational problem in the second half, it is a play-calling problem. We get so conservative in the second half when we have a lead, on both sides of the ball. On defense, we almost never blitz, and 80% of the time we are in cover 2, no matter what the situation is. On offense we shut down the passing game and stick to the run, even if it isn't working.
I couldn't agree more. In the first half we were taking advantage of their blitzing and soft coverage over the middle and getting 7-15 yd gains. In the second half it was that stupid swing pass to the outside and draws which got us 0-4 yds or so a pop. I wish we stayed consistently on the attack. It would have been great to drop 40+ on these guys. We could have done it if we stayed with the aggressive playcalling and this would have helped keep our defense off the field too.

+1 (I'm still laughing over your post!!!)
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Except the 2pt conversion vs. Northwestern... right?
Or does that not count because it doesn't fit into your dream-world?

Relax people. Its only one game, neither enough to declare the season a success or failure. We beat Mizzou in 1995 and had a losing season. Nice win, but I'd trade it for a MAC title or winning season.

Its a great win, gutsy call, and a good way to start the year. For my part, I'm reserving judgment until the season is over.

Our halftime adjustments sucked, and our playcalling went ultra conservative with the lead. I like to run the ball to take some time off the clock, but it was clear pretty early that we weren't going to be able to do that...we needed to go back to more of what got us that lead.

Still, the coaching was top notch tonight, IMO. Probably the best coached game we've had in the last 3-4 years. Tyler Sheehan has solidified that passing game, and it's clear the staff has a ton of confidence in him. I LOVE bringing Turner in for the occasional QB keeper. Yes, it's telegraphed when you bring him in, but much like Tebow for UF last year it doesn't matter if you execute it. The kicking game was fine. The punt formation looked better & better executed. The kick coverage actually had guys staying in their lanes and the cutback didn't kill us like it has in years past.

I'd still like to see a little more aggression on the defense, bring a few more blitzes rather than just sitting in base all night seeing how they'll attack us. I think this defense has enough athleticism and talent to try and dictate the pace of play rather than let the offense do it.

Still, kudos to coach Brandon & staff. A great gameplan that was executed properly to completely jump on the gophers from the get go. By the time they realized what hit 'em they were down a couple TDs. Also a GREAT job stepping up after giving up the lead.

If we play like this all season, I'll be a very happy panda.

We dropped a few passes in the second half. Zack Charles played a good game...but he dropped a BIG 3rd down conversion. We also missed a FG.

I was calling for a hitch and go in the second half because the Gopher DB's and LB's were jumping all over those short routes.

we must also conisder that the QB may have eschewed the deep throws in faovre of a shorter route. Omar did that a lot in his first year (the NIU game leaps to mind) Once he became comfortable with the downfield throws he was fine...

On a side note...I love trhe motion we run lining Ransom up inthe slot and bring him accross...it sets up the inside hand off well or you can throw a swing pass to him...or go back agaisnt the motion and run a slant with the inside reciver on the side he motions to. Our offense looked sophisticated last night...did it not?

I think Brandon's job just got a whole lot more secure with this win. It really does feel like the old days are back.

I mean, Partridge to Sheehan for the touchdown?

Yeah, this does feel like the old days.

The second half was eerily reminiscent of the 2005 Wisconsin game. Many of you will recall how giddy we were about the first half -- and how Wisconsin just pounded the ball on the ground in the second half and wore us out.

Minnesota took the same tack in the second half last night. They gave up on their passing game, which wasn't working, and the ground game almost won the game for the Gophers.

To me, this second half lapse isn't coaching. It's a reflection of the tools we have. I'd say "recruiting" -- but one of the most difficult positions in college football to recruit is to the defensive line. There are real scarcities on that side of the ball. I'm not going to criticize a coach for not bringing Top 25-level talent to that side of the ball, because -- when have we ever had a coach who could do that?

(Reggie White went to Tennessee. Not Middle Tennessee).

There were moments last night when I was shaking my head. Turner up the gut three times in a row? (Although, it worked. The first two times).

But, overall, it now looks like Brandon and his team closed down the play book last year because they simply didn't have players with the tools and experience to execute the wide open passing-oriented offenses we had grown used to. It wasn't just Turner, either -- the receiving corps was very thin last year.

On the Falcon radio network pregame show, they interviewed Tim Beckman, now a coordinator at Oklahoma State. Beckman had nothing but nice things to say about Brandon. Beckman said Brandon a great coach and he'll get the program back to where it was.

At the time, I thought: "Gee, is Beckman just spinning for a good friend? Does he believe what he's saying?"

It now looks like Beckman might be right.

I got to see the game last night at the BW's down here across from my apartment. The first half we were great. The defense looked fast, and the offense looked like it's supposed to. You can tell that Sheehan takes control of the huddle, and doesn't get rattled much. You could see it when they showed the huddle after plays. I was very happy with that. The receivers have got to work on catching the ball. Way too many dropped passes last night. Freddie made some good plays at the end of the game, but during the middle portion of the game, he dropped too many easy ones. I was curious to see how the team would play in the second half. I saw a defense that knew the run was coming, and couldn't stop it, and an offense that went east and west too much, and not enough north and south.

I am alright with running the ball a little bit more with a 21 point lead in the second half, but how many passes did we throw with that little bubble screen? Our short passing game was working all night, except we went away from it. I don't like that screen thrown as many times as it was last night. I had to quit watching the game, and listened to the rest of the game on my XM in the car, I was starting to curse a little bit, and couldn't be quiet. On the last play for the field goal to put it into OT, we tried that bubble screen less than two minutes left and it still got us nowhere. Why would that play be called when it hadn't worked all second half, and we needed to get down the field. Luckily, Freddie and Tyler were in a rhythm at that point, and they made a big first down when they needed to. I really love the play call for the two point conversion in OT. I wasn't sure how to feel about it before it happened. But in hindsight, I see the logic in it, in more ways than just trying to win on the road. Great win, and Coach Brandon did a great job of gameplanning for the first half, and having the kids really ready to play. I give him credit for that, as well as the OT. But I still have to see him make adjustments at halftime to really think that he is going to be the guy that we need in the real long term. I give him credit for last night, and I am very thankful that we came out with a big win last night. But let's see how the rest of the season plays out before we get overly excited. From what I saw last night, there is a very good chance we could run the table in the East though.

I'm not as optimistic. Miami has the division lead with a a decent win at Ball State. Akron beat Army, Kent State beat Iowa State...

It could be a real dog fight, actually.

Akron beating Army isn't in the same class as Kent beating Iowa State, or even Miami beating Ball State. Army stinks. Akron should've won that game.

Schad,
Good point....I was about to start a thread re: East the "weaker" Div.? I'm pretty sure that ALL the West teams got beat, while BG and KSU beat "BCS" teams and OU,Akron and Miami all posted wins...Only Buffalo and Temple(surprise) lost games for the East. I'd have to grant that the West played perhaps overall stronger teams, thanks primarily to OU's tough home game...but results are results.
