No, she's making the point that if you choose to go to a school you should support that school first. It's okay to root for OSU too. But you go to BG, you're a Falcon. Plain and simple.

I'm a Notre Dame fan too... but I'm a FALCON FIRST. That's all she was saying.

It needs to be said.

Yep, that's exactly what it is, and what it should be.

We shouldn't have to tell the students who to root for, but since they don't figure it out on their own, so be it. Honestly, the way the media talks about the Big 10 and no mention of the MAC (even in the area) I think that a lot of the students don't even realize that we play 1A football. Reminding them is a good thing.

I annually make a trip to the Motor City Bowl each season no matter who is in it and gather at the Old Shileleigh. Last year I was wearing my BG gear and my friend was in his Ohio State gear because that is where he graduated from. He was getting booed by the Central fans. I was talking to a few undergrads who saw I was with them and implied that I liked the Bucks. I said no, I hate OSU and Michigan. I'm a BG fan. They looked at me puzzled and said yeah Go Blue. To which I said, they are in the same division as Central, they are your rivals (not in a rivalry game sense) but in the fact they compete for some of the same athletes. They just looked blankly at me like I was speaking russian. I guess it takes more Ben Roethlisbergers and App. State upsets for people to see we actually are competitive rivals with the "big boys".

I live in Indianapolis. Muncie is about a 45 minute drive. There are numerous BSU alum in this area. They do not even know that BG is in the MAC. In fact the ones that do know that BG is in Ohio, didn't realize the town was named Bowling Green.

Yes, because it's only insulting to our student athletes who wear our school colors proud and care about this school. Last year's game against Ohio State was the tipping point in my mind as far as school pride went. We had a young team that struggled, OSU was stacked, but all the OSU slap asses on this campus decided to be stupid, paint the rock with OSU colors and wear their ugly garb around this campus in an attempt to insult those who were going to play for BGSU that weekend. Our players were furious about it, I talked to a few, some were downright embarrassed. That's why this article needs to be written.

You wanna follow OSU while going to BGSU? Buy a set of radio headphones and listen to the game while at the Doyt. Most of these kids are spoiled rotten who cheer for OSU because of their success, never mind the fact that their parents are paying $15,000 a year to BGSU for their schooling, and our athletic events are free to all students.

There is a conscious choice to attend BGSU. I grew up rooting for OSU, my brother went to BG in the late 90s and things were pretty brutal in terms of football, but when I went to 2 games in 2003, the BG/NIU game at the Doyt and a meaningless OSU game against some run of the muck team, I was sold on BG football.

Our students had a great showing last week, so I hope things are changing. As previously mentioned, we play D-1A football, so we compete with OSU for talent. Sadly, I still wonder what could have happened to this program had we beaten OSU in 2003. Until then, I hope more articles like this are written to call out the wannabes on this campus who by the grace of God wish they could have gone to OSU.

Great stuff....I've come to the point in my life where I loathe everything about the OSU fan base. I, personally, have nothing against OSU or their athletic program. It's the obnoxious, arrogant & demeaning attitude of the majority of Buck$ fans that I hate...many of these same people went to MAC schools.

Nobody will ever question who I root for...BGSU ONLY...that's it, no mas.

This story still cracks me up...and ticks me off at the same time.

2003 in Cbus. Ran into my roommate from 86-88 at BG and his wife...also a BG grad. BG at OSU. BiG game. They were both decked out in OSU crap head to toe. I couldn't believe it. I asked them what the hell they were doing and my friend Jeff said "We were afraid to wear BG stuff". Wussy.
He sent me an email the following Monday saying he couldn't believe how good BG was. I emailed him back and said "IF YOU FOLLOWED YOUR ALMA MATER, YOU'D KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!" I am sick and tired of this "All OSU, All the time" crap. Loved the Gator Chomp last Jan.

There are 39 colleges and universities in the great state of Ohio that play college football on some level. You wouldn't know that from the way the media covers when Tressel last took a dump. I can't listen to WKNR in Cleveland anymore cuz they shove Buck$ coverage down the throat. They must have 3 programs during the week in the evening devoted only to OSU. So I now choose not to listen or call the Road Man anymore. How the hell do you avoid becoming another cog in the OSU evil empire the way they get covered??? It's pushed on you from a very early age like some cult. Growing up, I didn't have the luxury of 23 ESPN channels or PPV to see most of the BG games. It was OSU all over the state on radio and they were the only team on TV. It was pretty difficult to avoid getting sucked in.

But I received the proper treatment and was able to break away from that plague.

This always kills me too...."I know you're a BG fan but you root for OSU too, right?" LOL! Hell no. "But you're from Ohio!!" So is Charles Woodson, Elvis Grbac and Desmond Howard. How did that work out? How about Bo Schembechler? People simply cannot believe I don't root for OSU. I get that same blank stare that others speak about. Their eyes glaze over in disbelief...how can you not love the Buck$?? Very easily, nut boy.

Oh well...I better stop now. LOL!

ORANGE AND BROWN ONLY....FOREVER.

Lizzie,
If you read this, stop by our tailgate area for a beer. Thanks for writing that.

Just to add a little fuel to the proverbial fire, it was while saying so long to my son - The "graduated" OU Falcon who is off in France for a year - that I made the following observation. We chose to spend the day together at BW3's in order to watch the BG vs. Go Suck an Egg game and I noticed right away that those dressed as we (burnt orange and seal brown), were outnumbered by about 4 to 1 by those dressed in scarlet & grey. Iwanted to slap each and every one of them  and ask them where in the he** they went to school?

I don't read into it that Lizzie is telling people WHO to cheer for per se.... I DO think she's expressing the feelings that MOST of us on this site have. Root for OSU if you want to... but remember WHERE you go to school. I have family who've graduated from BG, in fact were still enrolled last year prior to graduation. When I saw them decked out in Red And Gray at the OSU-BG game, it frankly got me P.O.'d.... root for Central Ohio Tech if you will, but NOT against your own school!

And, even though my wife and I choose to disagree on this... go to OSU if you think it's such a hot place.

Lizzie Keller is my new most favorite person

as for bgsuman, just another reason why I wish I wasn't from Ohio, or that I'm glad that I'm from Cincy (there was actually an article run on an OSU site last year talking about how Cincy and SW Ohio was the least suppotive of the Buck$)

I can understand those who go here and still root for OSU because they have been "life long fans" I have been a life long University of Cincinnati fan, but that doesn't mean UC is my number one anymore, BG is my number one college team, your school should be number one, you pay the money to go here and get into the games free. You can root for them all you want, but just not when they play the school you currently attend or attended, thats just a slap in the face. This basketball season I finally get the game I have wanted some coming to BG in the Fall of 05, Bowling Green at Cincinnati, and come Sunday Novemeber 11, for the first time in my life, this life long UC fan will cheer against UC. If I can do it, why can't OSU fans

Fact is, most "Buckeye" received the exact same Ohio State degree that Maurice Clarrett received.

I don't know what is more painful or downright bizarre- the Buck fans that never attended OSU or had a relative graduate from the school and blindly root for the Bucks 'cause they are from Ohio and "that's what your supposed to do"

or

the big time Ohio State fans that attended another school and even don red and grey when their alma mater takes on The Evil Empire.

I can't go without commenting on this topic. I agree with Lizzie entirely on her thoughts of supporting your school. I have always been and will always be a BG fan first and foremost and I'm tired of having to be an apologist about it.

Make no bones, I hate Ohio State but I feel this way about all the BCS schools. They have monopoloized college footbal so badly that it almost makes it impossible for a MAC, WAC, or 'smaller' conference to ever build their program to a national prominence.

So long as the 'BCS' conferences (aren't they Div. 1 just like BG and UT) control the purse strings through the bowl system the chances of the MAC and WAC ever producing programs to 'compete' with the big boys is virtually non-existent.

It is funny how a couple years ago when BG gave OSU a scare a good friend of mine who has season tickets to OSU but never graduated from there told me his greatest fear isn't losing to Michigan, but losing to a team like BG.

It isn't asking a lot of fans to at least wear BG gear to the game and change to your OSU gear when you go to a friends house to watch that game.

GO BG...SCREW THE BCS CONFERENCES

Talk about being nauseaous. Where I work plays oldies in the background. I was rereading the article and Hang on Sloopy came on.
