A little context might be helpful.

In 2006, we suffered 20 sacks and attempted to pass 347 times. That works out to one sack per every 17.4 pass attempts (I'm not counting sacks as pass attempts).

This year, we've reached 20 sacks allowed after 291 pass attempts. That's a sack per each 14.6 pass attempts.

That's not a good trend, and 20 is a lot. But considering how much we are passing, it seems reasonable to expect that the raw number of sacks would go up.

We are about three sacks ahead of last year's pace. That's not good, but it isn't the apocalypse either, and with the (relatively) softer part of our schedule ahead, the number of sacks per pass attempt could end up falling back to last year's level.

Excellent point, SF.

One other thing...I think Tyler got rattled by the 5 picks at BC...I mean, who wouldn't be??? At Miami, I honestly believe he wanted to avoid those situations and held the ball too long. He is only a SO and has started 6 games. Growing pains happen. We were all so pumped after seeing what he did in the first 4 games...it was bound to happen where he would struggle as well. Tyler is a smart kid...he'll learn what to do with more experience.

Having an effective ground game would help take the pressure off as well...

This question has been asked quite a few times. You have felt that you could pass on anyone; obviously, Miami stopped that a little bit. (Dan) Macon ran on them a little bit. Is there going to be a little more balance?

"I think we will do what we need to do to score points. Running the football -- if that is what we need to do to take a little pressure off of Tyler (Sheehan) as he gets through this slump right now, then that's what we will do. He has been effective for us and he has to fight through it and we have to help him fight through it. If running the football is the way to do it, then we can run the football. We know how to do that and we have the ability to do that."

Does this quote mean were gona start running the ball but once Tyler gets back on track were going to stop?

To make this a more complete analysis, in 2003, it was 528 attempts, 21 sacks, one sack per 25 attempts.

In 2004, it was 472 attempts, 13 sacks, one sack per 36 attempts.

In 2005, it was 411 attempts, 22 sacks, one sack per 19 attempts.

So, in summary, from 2003 to 2007, rate of sacks has gone from one per every 25 attempts to 36, 19, 17, and 15. Something is definitely amiss. My thought would be that defenses have figured out how to blitz against a 5 man protection scheme and get to the QB. And our o-line play is not what we hoped it would be. Any connection with Coach Stud moving from O-line coach to OC?
