In looking at the latest line - Akron +1 - and trying to figure out who plays who where and when, for the life of me, I can't figure out who to root for today.
BG in the drivers seat?

Now I know, we need to take care of our business first and foremost, however this is why this particular season is so much fun. Using Schad's research and the importance of 7 wins - Go Zips, eliminate Buffalo and then we take care of Akron next week?

It isn't quite that simple.SicSic80 wrote:Bump*

First, Akron needs to lose twice to ensure they can't get to seven wins. For that reason alone, I tend to lean toward rooting for Buffalo.
But that's just a lean.
The biggest games not involving Bowling Green will not be played this week. They are:
Buffalo at Miami
Akron at Miami
Miami at Ohio
It's simple. Miami needs to lose one of those. If they do, and Bowling Green takes care of business, we will win the division.
In addition, if Vanderbilt beats Miami today and Miami loses one of those games, the RedHawks would not be eligible for a bowl game, either.
But back to Buffalo-Akron.
if Akron loses, we would have a chance to eliminate them from bowl contention next week. We would still have an opportunity to try to beat Buffalo, too.
Also, even if Buffalo were to lose today, they would still be very much in contention for the East Division title. Buffalo is 2-0 right now in division play; everyone else, including Akron (1-1) already at least one loss.
A division title is almost certainly not going to be enough to get special dispensation from the NCAA to go to a bowl game with a losing record -- but winning the MAC title would be enough.
After digesting all of the above, that pretty much clears it up.Schadenfreude wrote:It isn't quite that simple.SicSic80 wrote:Bump*

I'm not that conflicted. The next Big Ten team Ball State beats will be their first, I think.professorjackson wrote:funny thing, even though Ball State losing to Illinois is theoretically good for BGSU's hypothetical bowl chances, I can't help rooting for the MAC team against the big eleven...
So I can root for Ball State and still recognize the near inevitability of the outcome.
