How the hell do so many High Schools afford FieldTurf? I've been to so many High School stadiums that have the stuff, it's unreal!

A lot of them, it seems, get sponsorship from the community, or a major business in the community. There's an almost disturbing trend around central Indiana lately of car dealerships donating money to high schools for field turf, etc. and getting naming rights to the stadium.

That is true. They also pass it off as an increase in our property taxes. But that is another topic.

Fundraisers and the aspect of next to no maintenance costs for many years make it doable for most high schools.

It also allows spring seasons to begin on time in northern climates. When lacrosse season begins next week, our high school will have quintuple-headers scheduled for the first couple of Saturdays while the grass fields at other schools dry out.

And if you knew ANYTHING about schools and property taxes, you MIGHT know that it takes the passage of a school levy and/or Bond Issue, PASSED BY THE VOTERS, to "increase your property taxes". As a retired educator, I still get upset by this generalization that the schools can do anything they want, and the taxpayers will have to pay for it, without any say in the matter.

And if you lived in Indiana, you'd know that any "rules" go out the window when it comes to property taxes. I think that may be the one thing Indiana's assbackward folks in the statehouse have over the Ohio circus. Of course, once Indiana catches up into the 20th century, things may be a little different.

Not if you live in Lexington, where the school board can raise taxes without a voter levy. There is a cap to the amount that can be raised, but yes our school board did in fact pass a small increase that was not voted on.

At some point someone had to vote to give the school board the authority to do that. Any way we look at it, anything we are dissatisfied with somehow comes back around to some electoral decision we the people made at some point.
Yeah right girl!

Considering I've been here for 6 years, its safe to say that I didn't vote for it. Not going to look it up, but it would not have to have been voted on either. The state government easily could've passed a law giving school boards this power. Do you vote for all the different taxes that are passed by any level of government?

Class of 61, Indiana is different than Ohio. Like TG said we are behind the times. I have no problems with an increase in my proprty taxes if it is for education, but schools are building 15 million dollar high school football stadiums or 3 million dollar swimming pools. The school districts have been out of control in Central Indiana and it has come to light with the new state property tax reassessment.

Indiana put itself in an unfortunate situation when they didn't reassess property tax values for such a long time, leaving it to homeowners to all of a sudden see a huge jump in their annual taxes. This was a huge problem when I was an escrow analyst for a commercial mortgage firm where we had properties that had been paying 60K a year for taxes all of a sudden owe 300K twice a year.

That being said, in California property taxes are only reassessed when a property is sold, so you can live in a home for a long time and not see your taxes increase a whole lot during your lifetime.

First of, I apologize for getting this thread off track.

Your right that is one of the many factors in Indiana's problem, especially the older homes. The City of Indianapolis built an albatross of a public library that ran over by the millions. Again, we could not vote on this project. Because of this mess the govenor wants to add referendums. Could you imagine if California handled their reassessment differently? Even less people would be able to afford their homes.

You could live in BG where it does go up for vote and still somehow passes.

Not going to deny they need a new Jr. High, but do they really need an additional $5 million or whatever it was for a performing arts center? Ridiculous, but they thoughtfully tied them together knowing it was the only way in hell they'd get that money.

I'm sorry, but a brand new auditorium is NOT a worthwhile use of our tax dollars.

Unless it comes with a brass pole for non-school hours.
