I'm sorry, but I don't really think you have much case here....local news (TV and print) is not in the business of increasing our ticket sales....they want to increase their ratings/circulation/etc.....How is this done? By talking/writing about what people want to hear....and you can't honestly tell me you think more people, even just in NW Ohio, care about BG than OSU....I love the falcons, but you have to be realistic about it. Just because you can't stand them, doesn't mean the masses don't love them, and these industries want to appeal to the masses.always a falcon wrote:Why don't I like OSU, let me count the ways. I will give you my main reason from where I live. Disportionate attention and coverage. I live closer to BG than OSU, but our local sports section acts like we don't even exist. I think the Dispatch has more about our games! It is like if you don't like OSU, you just suck as an Ohioan. If something is crammed down your throat for so long and you don't care for it,..it gets sickening after a while. Oh yeah, we have a lot of BGSU grads in our area, so they might even INCREASE their sales if they covered us.

I grew up an Ohio State fan. My parents had always been Ohio State fans and it kinda was just passed on. I am from Turdledo and I had no clue I would be going to BG until the end of my Senior year in highschool. I am happy with my decision and I am one of the biggest fans of the BG athletic program now. I would cheer for BG if the two teams played, because that is where I go and I love to cheer for underdogs. Does that mean I can't be an Ohio State fan though? I have to throw away my childhood team because I go to BG now.
Really, who cares if a BG student likes OSU? Hell, I know many student athletes at BG that are die hard OSU fans...what do you have to say about that? I agree, many people here are just jealous of the attention that OSU gets...why does that make them such a bad program? The media is the one giving them the attention, because frankly, they deserve it. They have arguably the greatest rivalry in college sports and have had some of the best teams in the nation consistently.
I think BG fans need to worry about our own program building a consistently successful program first, before we start getting mad about not getting the attention from the media...eh just my opinion...most dont agree, and I dont really care, so let me have it...but that has been something that bugs me around here as well...oh no, im not a worthy fan of BG cuz I like OSU as well, darn....

...ok im good...
I grew up an OSU fan. I became a BG fan when I got to campus. I still continued to root for OSU until their fans drove me away from it. I have no problem with the media reporting mostly on OSU. It is not their job to cater to everyone, but to get ratings/subscriptions. They do that by giving the people what they want, and by and large that is OSU coverage.
If OSU had never fired John Cooper and continued to be mediocre in big games, I'd probably continue to root for them. Unfortunately they had to go out and get an elite coach, and now too many of their fans are just plain annoying. Mainly, as a Browns fan, I get sick & tired of hearing how every Buckeye ever should be drafted in the 1st round by the Browns, because they're the best prospect to ever play that position. I got sick of hearing how OSU was going to destroy Florida last year, despite my arguments that Florida was still a real good team.
More than anything though, it was Troy Smith that made me hate OSU. I got sick of hearing how he was the greatest QB ever and should be taken in the top 5 by so many people.
Basically it all boils down to the same thing. So many OSU fans cast a total blind eye to everything that happens in college football if it doesn't revolve around Columbus, OH. As a general rule many of them are quite ignorant in the goings on of the rest of D1A football, and that bugs me. No, not all their fans are this way. Some are downright civil and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, for them, those seem to be much less vocal.
As an aside, I also take exception to the OSU fans that always want to trumpet how great a guy Jim Tressel is because he wears a sweater vest and goes to church. The guy was a cheater at YSU, and would sell his mother up a creek to win. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, because I think most successful coaches have a similar attitude. What I don't understand is why he has such a holy image...I'm guessing it's just because we're in Ohio. Saban probably has a similar image in 'bama, Stoops in Okie, etc.

Always a Falcon and hammb just saved me a Falcon Nest full of typing.
Thanks guys! I agree with everything they said about OSU.
My question...
Why is it so hard for most OSU fans to believe I ONLY root for BGSU? They look at me like I have 3 heads when I tell them I don't root for anyone else. They simply can't believe or accept that...and some even get pissed and say I'm not a true fan. Really? Why would I root for OSU? I didn't go to school there! "But you're from Ohio" they'll whine. SO EFFING WHAT???? So are Desmond Howard, Elvis Grbac and Charles Woodson and they ended up at MICHIGAN.
Personally, I have nothing against the university or OSU program...or Tressel. He ain't an angle like most OSU fans want to believe, but he's a hell of a game day coach. It's the majority of asinine OSU fans that make it unbearable and their blind loyalty make me laugh. The whole "THE Ohio State University" deal is another...or the "OH IO" shout. Ummm, OHIO is OHIO UNIVERSITY IN ATHENS, DOORKNOBS!
Besides, they have plenty of fans...they don't need me.
ORANGE AND BROWN ONLY AND ALWAYS...get used to it cuz it will NEVER change with the Freak.
My 2 cents...

And there is one of my reasons right there. My reasoning for not liking osu is simple, I'm not from Columbus, I wouldn't be going to school there, and I wasn't brought up in a "Buckeye House" (mom isn't a big sports fan, and my dad is from New York). Its like I always tell the osu fans who somehow don't get that reasoning, "if you want me to cheer for osu, have osu and UC trade names"Falconfreak90 wrote:"But you're from Ohio" they'll whine.

Random thoughts
I don't hate osu; I don't root for them; I've always been somewhat indifferent.
I do hate the media overexposure when they're doing well.
I don't hate osu students/alumni; I do hate a lot of the rednecks who attach themselves to osu's football program
Tressel isn't the saint that the Buckeye fans believe he is, but he's not the embodiment of evil that the haters want to believe either.
OSU does hold a statewide appeal that none of the other state universities will ever have. Some of it is obviously football generated. Some of it, however, also is the result (no matter how badly many at other state schools want to deny it) of decisions that were made over a hundred years ago to found a new university and position it as the statewide flagship school. I've come to grips with this and am content for BGSU to simply be the best university that it can be. Hoping for 140 year old decisions and 140 years f. momentum to somehow be undone is simply setting oneself up for dissapointment.
BTW, when these decisions were made, BG and KSU weren't even a glint in the eye of the state legislature. If osu had never been founded and that role had been given to Miami or Ohio (both of whom fought and lobbied for it tooth and nail) we'd be having the same bitchfests about the evil monolith in Oxford or Athens.
Given the above, I don't expect the local media to ignore osu, but I sure as s*&% don't expect BGSU and UT to be ignored in favor of MORE osu coverage.
Time, effort and energy spent hating or bitching about osu is time, effort and energy that could better be spent constructively rooting for and following BG.

OK...I might as well step into the breech...I don't understand the "hating" of Ohio State, when most of the reasons for said hatred, is not under the control of OSU (i.e., Media coverage; using their full, official name that goes back about 140 years; stupid fans that probably have no affiliation with the school other than being an Ohioan; etc.; etc.).
Jamie Gillis' post summed it up best!
Ohio State dwarfs every other University in the state in size. OSU's at about 60k students and the next closest is Cincy at about 34k. Everyone "hates" number one. Just look at the US...Supposedly everyone thinks the US is terrible. Why? We're the only Super Power left. Is it arrogant of us to call ourselves "Americans"???? Did we "usurp" the use of the name America from all North and South Americans?
All all this belly aching about "hating" Ohio State makes us look like a bunch of mid-major, cry-babies. If you truly love BG, and think it truly is the best university in the state of Ohio, why do you need affirmation from other sources? Just go on loving our University and to hell with all that other nonsense. Who really cares? Take all that energy you spend posting and railing against Ohio State and use it for rallying our on university to become better academically and in sports! Work on making us look better rather than complaining about and fruitlessly trying to tear-down Ohio State.
That is all...

I don't care if they use the state flag. Oh by the way OSU is the biggest school in Ohio makes the most money and won more national championships. I could see if you don't like them but that doesnt mean every time their name pops up bash them. I'm sure if you got on buckeye planet they don't bash BG. This is just some childish fued between a team BG plays only once every ten years. Come on grow up.
