This is garbage, if Antonio Smith or any friends or family happen to read this, here's an apology for the idiocy of others. Smith has been a delight to watch and a play-maker for us since he joined the team. I don't think the worst player in college football would've started as a freshman. He made a mistake tonight, but hardly lost us the game. Give the guy a break, he shouldn't be called out like this by a BG "fan."

Clearly I have not watched this kid play all year (or previous years), but getting beat deep by Tulsa is not insulting. Those same receivers beat BYU and Oklahoma deep as well as all C-USA. Mazhlan went out and found some speed. Though, I understand you'd like more of a cushion... but well trained receivers then cut inside... which is why we had 540 yards per game.
On the hit: legal hit. Smith dropped his head at the last second. In spite of what the announcers said every time there is helmet contact it is not illegal. Otherwise all one would need to do is lower your head and you'd get an extra 15 at least half the time. And frankly, while you might say the Tulsa player was too aggressive, Smith was being aggressive by not calling a fair catch when he CLEARLY should have. Its a contact sport, I'm glad he is OK.
BUT, I'm not sure which is more amazing... the hit, or the fact that he held on to the ball. Give him props for that if nothing else this game.

To any of you trashing Antonio - seriously, get a life. He's a great kid playing his heart out for this University on one of the biggest stages of his entire life, and you want to call him out online?
Yeah, he maybe made some mistakes, but that doesn't mean he deserves to be trashed by some idiots whose biggest athletic accomplishment is making it through one game of NCAA '08 without getting any Cheeto residue on their PS2 controller.
Sleep it off, spaz.

Just watched it again (and the Williams KR TD...it's all I had the stomach for), and Smith didn't drop his head. He turned his head down, yes, but only to face up field. The level of his head didn't lower at all, the angle, the position, nothing but the facemask. The guy that made the hit did so with the top of his helmet. In the NFL, he'd have an invoice in the mail from the commissioner before he got to the team bus.JesseTU wrote: On the hit: legal hit. Smith dropped his head at the last second. The hovering over Smith was a little much, but not as bad as I thought on first review. I'm willing to chalk a bit of that up to the mood I was in while watching, too.

Antonio is our best cover corner. Who else are you going to put back there? He is a great guy on and off the field and has made a lot of great plays for this program. As for his fumble on the punt, well he was forced into that role because corey was injured. He also fumbeld a punt against Ohio, so I dont why he was still returning kicks. That's a personnel decision. Tulsa's offense is good and giving them the ball in prime field position does not help. You try playing defense when you're down 42 points and your offense hasn't scored a point.

With some of the BS being posted on here I'm shocked this site hasn't blown up. Antonio is a STUDENT-athlete, and he isn't the reason we lost this game, and there is no reason people should be saying what they are about him. Its just football, its not life and death, the sun will rise in the morning

As far as Antonio Smith on the punt returns tonight, what’s crazy to me is, the one he fumbled was all on himself. He tried catching it with his chest with room around him and it bounced off his pads resulting in the fumble. It was similar to the muffed punt that Zach Charles had that shot down our chances in the OU game in the 4th quarter. But what really surprised me is how he was able to hang onto the punt he got crushed on. He dropped the easy catch and held onto the one in all likelihood he should have fumbled on.
As far as the actual hit goes, and I don’t think it has been mentioned by anyone yet, Kenny Lewis (I believe it was him, it looked like #21) should be buying Antonio Smith dinner for a week!!! We watched the play a couple times on DVR and Lewis completely whiffed on his jam on the gunner on the play. The Tulsa player make a simple in on Lewis and blew right past him on the play and had about a 50-yard run directly towards Antonio Smith and hit him like a missile. We watched the play a couple times and all you can do is wonder how Smith didn’t get killed on the play. The Tulsa gunner basically had a red carpet laid out in front of him as Lewis did his best impression of a bull fighter (olay!) on his seek-and-destroy hit on Smith. A couple minutes later on TV you could see Lewis talking to Smith on the bench. I thought you could make out that he said he whiffed on the play.

GO BG!!!
I am not blaming this game on him by any means.
My point was that he is simply not cutting it as a "cover corner", not just based on the Tulsa game, but any other game all season. I understand that we lack options, but shouldn't that be a problem that is addressed?
As far as people referring to him as a "playmaker" I haven't seen any "plays" from him, so sorry if I don't buy that argument.
I couldn't even begin to count the number of threads bashing AT while he was the starting QB, so as far as calling out a student-athlete, isn't that part of what this forum is about? Us wanna-be coaches talking and discussing players, positions, plays, games, etc. I thought so at least. The point of this is to voice opinions (so long as they don't cross the line and threaten someone's life/well being). So that is my opinion on the subject of our horrible defensive backfield, and namely #2. If you don't care to read, don't read, its your free-will. Just as it is mine to post rants about how I cannot stand watching him struggle game after game after games trying to cover someone.
