First off, best of luck to Glaud and Charles...I hope they have great success at D State. Obviously, Tyler has cemented the #1 job and he earned it. If he can stay healthy, he's as good as any QB in the MAC.

I'd like to see what Nate Brown can do as well. I agree with Flip's view on DJ Young. I think most of us were pretty high on him when he came here but he hasn't done a whole lot...and he didn't make the trip to Mobile due to grade issues. Maybe a switch will light a fire under him.

Our O line will need new contributors. I would think Brandon Curtis will move over to Center and Steffy will be back. Aaron Kent will be a SR and Jeff Fink will have a chance to win a spot. Brady Minturn will be a RS JR this year. Younger guys like Buckosh, Donahue, Albert, Dodge and Bojicic...they were recruited for a reason. The majority of those guys are 6'6" or 6'7". We will need these guys to be the next class to step up...unless our 08 OL recruits can come straight in and win jobs. I haven't seen any of them play HS ball so I can't say.

We have holes to fill. We need work in certain areas...but 2008 could be a very special season for BG.

Yeah, it was sort of a joke, but I find no reasonable explanation for why we are moving so many guys around each year. Can't we just recruit better and find players that can play instead trying to find "athletes" and then playing them for two years and deciding to change positions.

(Oh, and you tend to be a little blinded with your loyalty to Brandon so I guess we balance each other out.)

And I'll go on record to say I hope Partridge doesn't play both ways next year. And I mean no offense to Corey whatsoever. But the fact is that he has gotten hurt each season. He is too valuable to the offense. Why would you put him on defense and risk him getting hurt there? And it's not like we are in need of DBs. Smith and Lewis are back for their fourth and third years as starters and Brown, Mahone, and Sanderson certainly can handle safety. Where is the need to put Partridge on D?

Dude, we are not an NFL team. These guys are 17 or 18 years old when they make commitments to BG. Many of their bodies are not even fully developed yet.

But hey, I am sure that Brandon just moves guys around because he likes change and desires nothing more than to spark new threads on AZZ.com and certainly not because he feels it gives the team the best chance to be successful.

The news about Glaud and Charles is disappointing, to say the least. Always hate to see us lose players for any reason, especially those that have shown some flashes of what they are capable of doing with time & training.

Best of luck to both of them, though.

There might be a few other "old" guys on here, that remember a few years back (ok, 40), that we moved an all conference safety to middle guard!
Anyone remember who? ;-)

So they can't take that into considersation when they are recruiting guys?

And most skilled position players are developed already. That's why they are playing Div I college football. You don't recruit guys like Rhett Magner thinking "Oh, he's going to add 30 pounds when he gets here and is going to be a monster". Skill guys might add some weight because of a better training program, but it doesn't fundamentally change thier skills.

And your point is the exact reason we should have been recruiting OL the last two years. I would agree that that is the one position where the players body does continue to develop and actually changes thier ability to compete. It's exactly why we should be trying to redshirt these guys also.

I'm sure Brandon is trying to do what he thinks is best, but I don't like it. I would rather see us recruiting players at specific positions, then coaching them up for four/five years where they get a chance to develop year after year to a point where they are at their best in their jr/sr seasons. But we seem to give up on guys at one positon, move them somewhere else, and think they can be better at the new position with just a year or two of deveolpment instead of four or five years at their original positon.

I will just say that we seem to move people around to various positions far more than I can remember other teams doing. That's not to say it doesn't happen to this same extent elsewhere, as I don't follow other programs close enough to really know for sure, but it really seems like we move people a LOT.

I'm also inclined to agree with Warthog in regards to our positioning of defensive personnel. I'm sure that they don't base it solely on weight, but it certainly seems as though we have a habit of moving people from DB to LB, LB to DE, or DE to DT. The end result is that we always seem to be woefully undersized at the DT position, and generally our DEs are small as well. I know the company line is some BS about wanting a faster defense, but our defenses have been both slow & undersized in recent years.

I don't want to sound like Falconboy trumpeting size as the most important measure in a defense, but to completely discount size is every bit as bad. I'm a firm believer that size is not the end all, I've seen players of many different sizes excelling at many different positions. Still, when you make a habit of completely disregarding size you're going to see the ramifications of that...the biggest being poor run defense. Hmmm...what has been our consistently biggest weakness for the past 5 years?

And the reasons both those things happen is poor coaching.

On a game to game basis I still think our biggest consistent weakness is run defense. Even in the games we've been good our run defense is generally pretty poor.

How soon we all forget: Brandon has forged a 38-24 record and won two of three bowl games in five years. His 38 wins overall and 27 in the MAC are the best in the conference over the last five years.

According to a USA Today coaching salary survey published in December, Brandon made $183,909 total guarantee compensation last year. That ranked him 10th among the MAC's 13 coaches. The average salary for MAC coaches was $253,281, making Brandon one of the nation's best values.

What are we all complaining about again?

Factman,
You aren't referring to Joe Green are you? Perhaps one of the best "pure athletes" I ever saw at BG, even playing out of position. (Yeah, I know I'm one of the "old" guys) ;-)

Sad - Glaud was very excited to come to BG, and I was very excited to watch him play. I hope he finds what he's looking for.

As far as moving people around? I've said in the past how asinine I think it is. I'm with Hammb in feeling like we do this more than most. That's just an off-the-cuff reaction though, as we all obviously don't follow every team in the country like we follow BG.

Moving people to account for need is all well and good. It just seems that we do it so often it speaks to deficiencies in recruiting planning and talent evaluation. Everybody recruits athletes and then finds positions for them to contribute. I don't think everybody moves established players around as often or as many times per individual as we do. I don't feel like a lot of our players really ever get the chance to contribute or fulfill their potential because they are always learning a new position for one reason or another. That forces them to think instead of play, and it contributes to what looks like a slow team with fast players.
