I'm sure there are a lot stories like that for this particular game.
I work near Sylvania, and I've got a stupid web conference I have to attend that afternoon, so I won't be able to leave early. I'll be busting my butt to get to BG, park, and make it to my seats by kickoff. I'm a die hard and wouldn't miss any home game that I can realistically attend.

However, the fact of the matter is that this gametime actually makes it a struggle for me, and I'm sure many others, to get to the game in time for kickoff. How much of our fanbase is realistically willing to go through the effort to get to a game at an inconvenient time, in the cold, to watch a team that has largely been a disappointment?

I know I'm preaching to the choir on this group, because most of us ARE the types that will do everything in our power to get to this game. I'm just not convinced that we're going to have a lot of casual fan turnout with this game time given the rest of the circumstances.

My brother (UTRocketMan) got something through the Boyscouts about camping out on the field the night after the game.

No fires and no tent stakes.

Not sure about the marketing thought there. May be even too cold for me to spend the night in a tent on DP field.

I am also not comfortable with a UT fan (even my brother) sleeping on our field. Tailgaiting, is one thing, but I draw the line here.

A firend of mine sent Greg Christopher an email about the akward start time, and the inconvenience it will cause to many fans. This was his response:

Thanks for the note. We are set for 6pm on 11/21. While no kickoff time is perfect for everyone, we discussed the various options and decided to give 6pm a try. Look forward to seeing you next week. Roll Along! Greg Christopher

They obviously are gambling on this one, hopefully it will pay off. Im impressed with the marketing going on for this game (after all it is BGSU marketing), but if the start time was 7 or 8 they would be alot more successful. We will just have to see. Hope everyone tries to get out to see the Falcons!

The marketing is a nice effort, should be the case regardless of the game.

If he is actually saying what was the real case, then I think they were seriously NUTS to start the game at 6 p.m. It makes no sense on any level. Simply and inexcusably nuts.

Yeah ... I read Christopher's response and thought, this isn't a calculated risk, it's a longshot. There are almost NO indicators that point this to being a success.

I suppose it could be a sign that they might have expected a better season. To be honest, a team likely charging to a title might have drawn better.

I'm starting to think that they want students to come to this game, realizing that they've totally lost the student fanbase in the wake of our losses to EMU and Miami, and they'll do anything to get what they want. They're probably concerned about students going home for the weekend or something like that, and that an early start time will allow them to catch the game and then still have time to get wherever they are going following the game. Personally I don't know why anybody would go home this weekend with Thanksgiving coming up next week, but all I know is that tons of students don't stay in BG on the weekends regardless of timing.

Many students take an extended Thanksgiving Break

When I taught Freshman Orientation in NC, I always scheduled a quiz on the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break.

I don't think the coaches have the report with the student base that existed in the near past either. The kids liked the Meyer Attitude. Heck, all the fans did.

I almost canceled my season tickets when Meyer was here.

I got down after going to the Falcon Club luncheons on Fridays and constantly hearing about how poor of a team we were and we were no way near a Division I caliber team.

Considering what he was used too, how low the team had fallen, and the reconstruction job required, there are times I would have agreed with him.

Frankly we could use some of that firm, if harsh talk now.

And that's exactly what I love to hear from my football coaches.

:soppy:

The same type of stuff you hear from Belicheck & Parcells on a regular basis...let the media and fans bask in the good stuff. I like my football coaches to be in routinely bad moods :)

I'm not saying it should be on the lips of every coach to pass through BG. But some have been able to use that approach and get something done. It is a school of thought as much as anything. I do know it tends to rub certain groups raw within BG fandom. Fair enough, but then as we all know, no coach makes everybody happy.

I have the day off....Taking Josh outta school early while Jake and Mrs. Freak are going to spend quality time together Friday evening. The Scouts are spending the night at the McKinley Musuem so Jake wants to do that.

We'll be there no later than 3. I wouldn't miss this one for anything...even if my new job told me I was fired. Gotta keep the priorities straight. Luckily, they were cool with me taking the day off unpaid.
