BRING BACK GREG STUDRAWA AS HC
See this is what I don't like about discussing potential head coaches. Beckman's success or failure as a Defensive Coordinator means almost NOTHING when it comes to his potential as a head coach. The same goes for coach Stud.
Coordinator positions are 99.9% Xs & Os. It's all about analyzing the mismatches and calling the plays to best take advantages of those mismatches. The HC helps the coordinators devise their gameplan in preparation about how they want to attack the opposing team, but the bulk of the coordinators' jobs is done on gameday by making the proper adjustments and attacking weaknesses.
The job is so completely different than the head coaching job that a coach's track record in that role means nothing to me as a potential head coach. Head coaching is about leadership. It's their job to take control and create the attitude of the team. It's their job to coordinate the assistant coaches and devise the gameplans that will be used on Saturday. They make the HARD decisions on game day (when to go for 2, 4th downs, trick plays, etc.). The head coach is the captain of the ship. He is not directly responsible for most of what you see on gameday, but he indirectly effects all of it. The head coach is also largely responsible for recruiting and recognizing talent in recruits. He's also in charge of discipline.
Having talked with coach Stud on numerous occasions I think he's got the attitude that I like to see in a head coach. What I don't know is whether he's got the leadership abilities or the abilities to put together a good gameplan. That is for the interview room to decide.
I just don't like dismissing good candidates because their units as coordinators didn't have the results you'd want to see. I just don't see the jobs as similar. That's why Gregg Brandon (and countless others) made great coordinators and were failures as HCs.

Studs would bring fire to players as a HC. It was a mistake to assume GB could maintain a high-powered, fire breathing football team after having been in charge of a high-octane office. It could be a mistake to think Studs couldn't find somebody that could do what he can't. In the end though, I think he is best suited for the OL coaching roll. He gets the position, knows how to play the fanatic assistant role. Not sure it would translate well as HC.
What was fun about Urban was his Bill Cowher-like ability to motivate players, fans, boosters, to drive nails with their forheads. Students showed up because they were Urban's personal army, and he worked very hard to get that going. You'd see him storming frat houses with pizza, doing the work this program needed. We need that again sadly, GB frittered it away. There is more student good will here now than pre-Urban, but something, personality-wise, is needed to stoke the whole fan base.
