Trading out of the first few picks is not as easy as people make it out to be. In thi syear's draft there isn't a "franchise" QB or a really great LT prospect...I don't see anybody on the board that screams "franchise" anything.MACMAN wrote:the lions need to trade that #1 pick for a player whos out there already and proven...for any number of positions, but I would think Oline would be a good start.
You aren't going to find another team willing to give you anything close to fair value for the pick...
Detroit is a good spot for Steve. At the end of the season, John Standiford was the #2 option behind Megatron (who may be the MAN at WR in the NFL by this time next year) ....that speaks volumes for the talent level atWR in Detroit
Sadly for Detroit I think Crabtree is probably the best prospect in the draft, but there is no way that they use the #1 overall on a WR. Beyond that he's not as good of a prospect, IMO, as Calvin Johnson was either.Flipper wrote:Trading out of the first few picks is not as easy as people make it out to be. There is no way in hell you'll find a taker for a top 5 pick in this draft. Not if you want to get anywhere near what the value chart says you should. This draft is insanely deep. Quality starters will be had in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, for sure. But the top 5? Blech. There isn't a prospect that I really want the Browns to grab at #5, I cannot imagine how awful it would feel with the #1. What a s**t year for Detroit to go 0-16.
Norm on 1470 keeps spouting off that the Lions must draft Andre Smith, but if they try to put him at LT for years, I think he'll be a big time bust. He doesn't have the footwork for that position in the NFL. This is just an awful year to have a top 5 pick, IMO. There isn't a player out there that deserves anywhere close to what they'll be getting paid.
As a Lions' season ticket holder (yeah, I know) this is the absolute worse year to have the #1 pick. There is no clear player that should be taken. As many have said, whoever is selected will be taken way too high and WAY overpaid. As for Sanders, I certainly hope he makes the roster and contributes significantly. The Lions are in dire need (of alot) of a kick returner. Sanders' best shot to stick is to carve his niche as a returner.
His receiver duties will all depend on the OC (yet to be named). Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald ended the year on IR and are the #2 and #3 right now. With that said, Martin Mayhew will purge the roster in the off-season. The turnover will be significant. The Lions have two 1st round picks (#1 & #20), one 2nd rounder (#1), and two third rounders (#1 & #20). That's 5 players in the top 84 picks. If Mayhew does it right those should be starters/key reserves.

I don't see Sanders as a returner in the NFL at all. To my knowledge he never even tried it in Cleveland. He's too big and doesn't have the explosive jets to pull that off. His best bet, IMO, is in a possession WR role. Of the guys you listed, I'm pretty sure that McDonald can be a FA this year too, so who knows about that.SB-50 wrote:As a Lions' season ticket holder (yeah, I know) this is the absolute worse year to have the #1 pick. As to your draft picks you are absolutely correct. In this draft, and with a roster like the Lions', it is not inconceivable that they could draft 5 new starters with those picks. The draft is very deep.
Hopefully, Steve can convince the Lions to unretire No. 20
so that I won't have to buy a new jersey.
When I close my eyes I still see the Fat Punter!
The biggest joke is watching Matt Millen talking on NBC's Super Bowl coverage right now. Can anyone have any less credibility than Matt Millen doing commentary on a NFL Championship broadcast?
