On the flip side of the painful cuts, the roster announcement marked a thrilling day for Diyral Briggs. An undrafted linebacker from Bowling Green, the linebacker's steady play punched his NFL ticket.

Briggs, 6-4, 230 pounds, distinguished himself on the practice field and in the four preseason games. Fellow linebackers Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes each singled out Briggs when asked during training camp to name the player who impressed them most.

Singletary said: "He's young. He has the talent. Going forward, we want to see him develop. He's still raw, we just have to work with him."

This is great news. Nice to see a BG defensive player stick out there. I will have to follow the 49'er's a bit more from now on to see how he's doing.

As a avid Seahawks fan, it pains me to see this, because I want him to do good, and his team to do poorly.

This is absolutely wonderful news. I was stunned that he wasn't drafted last year, thinking he was an absolute lock for it. I'm thrilled to see that he is sticking with the 49er's, and I hope he has a very long career at the next level!

His measurables weren't enough to warrant a draft pick, but his production at the college level was enough to get him a spot in a camp. Once you're in camp it's a matter of working hard and wanting it bad enough. Clearly they think he does those things and that he's got potential as well. Good for him!

He played the entire second half and apparently is getting attention of the organization and his fellow players. Here is a quote from starting 49ers linebacker Takeo Spikes after the game last night...

LINEBACKER TAKEO SPIKES

On who he is seeing emerge on defense?: “Our outside linebacker Diyral – he’s a rookie – Briggs. He’s doing a great job. He’s a smart guy, a smart young guy, very attentive. I think what you’re seeing out here on the field, that’s a testimony to what he puts in throughout the week. He’s one of the guys – there are several guys, several guys.”
Glad to hear it! Diyral was one of the few players I had classes with that was present at group meetings and played his role in the group project. Always stopped and talked when I saw him on campus, really a nice guy.

Glad to hear and wish him the best.

49ers cut Briggs today to make room for an offensive tackle they signed. They already have 7 players signed to their practice squad. Hopefully Diyral will land a spot as well.

I had wondered about this with some of the reading I had done about the 49ers looking to add through free agency after other teams made their cuts. Though if he doesn't at least find a spot on SF's practice squad, you can add Mike Singletary to my "bite my azz" list.

I'm guessing this was a tactic by SF to keep Briggs from being among the many players getting picked over by other teams. Keep him on the roster, let all the cuts and practice squad signings happen, and signing other players that are cut. Then other teams are pretty much set and they can feel confident about releasing Briggs, yet getting him back for the practice squad.

Very common tactic to try and protect the guys that the team really likes for the PS.

Diyral was in fact signed to SF's practice squad.

09/08/2009 The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed LB Diyral Briggs to the practice squad.
