Mr. Frieda:
This "Automatic" rule was not in affect in 2002. The article from Fort Wayne was written March 2, 2004 and notes that the rules changed the prior Sunday. That would mean the rules changed in 2004. This is why the 2002 season got ND no BCS bowl. Once again...LEARN TO READ!!!
but let me make it simple for you again...
Prior to this rule change, "6 conference champions from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 10, Big East and ACC automatically qualify for the BCS bowls. The other 2 spots are at large selections from the best remaining teams. After the 2 top BCS teams are placed in the BCS Championship game, then the other 6 are placed in the remaining 3 games.
2002 Rankings were:
Miami - Big East winner
Ohio State - B10 winner
Georgia - SEC winner
USC - Pac 10 winner
Iowa - 1st in ranking after the conference winners selected
Washington State - 2nd in ranking after the conference winners selected
Oklahoma - Big 12 winner
Kansas St
No Dame
Texas
Michigan
Penn State
Colorado
Florida State - ACC winner
For 2004, the rules have changed.

I know how the BCS works, you're still not explaining the Notre Dame rule, so I'll just leave it alone. Thanks for sending me to a link which I still don't think says what you think it says. Maybe someone else can actually explain the link, rather than just interpret it.

First, you criticize me for not reading, when in actuality, I read and copied and pasted, and then you couldn't simply read it. OK...Here it is again. I just hope you read it this time...
This is the 2004 "New" Rule. This is a copy and paste straight out of an earlier post that you obviously did not read. I will go a step further this time and highlight all references to Notre Dame. If you find it too difficult of a read, scroll to the bottom and read the yellow. I made it even easier for you.
Automatic Access For Institutions Without Guaranteed Access
1. Should a team from a conference which does not have an automatic selection or an independent institution be ranked in the top six* such team shall be guaranteed selection in one of the games of the Bowl Championship Series. In this event, should Notre Dame have a top ten ranking* or a record of at least 9 wins**, Notre Dame shall be guaranteed selection in one of the games of the Bowl Championship Series.
2. Should two teams from conferences which do not have an automatic selection or one or more independent institutions be ranked in the top six*, the bowls shall select these two top six* teams for the two at-large selections in the BCS. In this event, should Notre Dame have a top ten ranking* or a record of at least 9 wins**, the bowls shall select from among these two teams and Notre Dame for the two at-large selections.
3. Should three or more teams from conferences which do not have an automatic selection or one or more independent institutions (any combination totaling three or more teams) be ranked in the top six*, the bowls shall select from among these three or more top six* teams for the two at-large selections in the BCS. In this event, should Notre Dame have a top ten ranking* or a record of last least 9 wins**, the bowls shall select from among these three or more top six* teams and Notre Dame for the two at-large selections.
Here it is more simplistic for you...
Number 1 - There are 6 spots first filled with the BCS conference winners and 2 remaining. If ND has 9 wins or top 10, they get on of those 2 spots.
Number 2 - If 2 non-BCS teams are in top 6 and ND has 9 wins, ND must be picked for one of those 2 spots and then one of the 2 non-BCS teams get the last spot.
Number 3 - If 3 non-BCS teams are in top 6 and ND has 9 wins, ND must be picked for one of those 2 spots and then one of the 3 non-BCS teams get the last spot.
**I did not make up the part about Notre Dame. That is a copy straight out of the rules. Take your time and read it slowly. If you don't get it this time, I don't think anyone is going to help you. It's time for you to go do your own homework.

So based on these rules, you are partially right in this statement. They would select two of the three teams, not Notre Dame and another team. I'm not stupid...and I CAN read. It says "In this event, should Notre Dame have a top ten ranking* or a record of at least 9 wins**, the bowls shall select from among these two teams and Notre Dame for the two at-large selections."BelieveNBG wrote: The worst part about this whole BCS thing is if there are 2 non-BCS schools that are in the top 6 and ND has 9 wins, of the 2 at-large bids, one MUST go to ND and then the bowl picks one of the non-BCS teams.
This is where my confusion comes in, because you messed up your own interpretation of the rules. Settle down and realize what you said...then correct it. Nothing in that clause guarantees ND a BCS bowl when there are 2 NON BCS schools in the top 6, it simply opens the access to a BCS bowl.

You are the one that should settle down. You started by going on the attack mode with your "LEARN TO READ!!!" comments. You continued your insults with things like "since you are on the BCS committee???" No need to insult, just state your case, instead of playing childs games. All you needed to do, instead of being insulting, was to copy the portion you didn't agree with and state your intepretation. In the end, I could be wrong or right and it wouldn't be the first time for either, but next time try stating your case in a non-insulting/stupid manner.
As far as my comments on how the BCS works, I was asked "by you" what happened in 2002 and why did ND get no bowl, so I answered the question. If you knew already, then why ask???
I am SO DONE with this thread and I hope you are too...GEEZ!!!
In the end, I hope we can agree on one thing.
GO BG!!!
