HAHA!

You're kidding right? Remember what Adrian Peterson did to us? This kid might be BETTER right now than Peterson is. He's certainly a heckuva lot better than Wolfe at NIU or McDougle at UT.

Our run defense sucks goat balls, and unless something drastic happens in these next couple weeks, I see a HUGE problem for the defense. His name is DeAngelo Williams. I think our offense can light up their defense too, so it should be a great game, but I'd be shocked if this kid doesn't go for at least 200 against us.

We had a little longer to prepare for the MCB last year and we sure clamped down on that Wright kid....

Aw crap.... Williams is going to kill us, he's going to kill us all!

All this focus on Omar and passing the ball. Love Omar as much as everyone else here. But let's not forget that we can run the ball too. Give PJ and the O-line a little cred. Sure DeAngelo Williams rushed for 1,828 yards and 21 touchdowns this season which is essentially double Pope. Williams is a premeire college back and will do well in the next level. But he also carried the ball nearly twice as many times as PJ (295 to 150). Williams averages a gaudy 6.2 yards per carry, yet P.J. averages 6.3 yards per carry, both absoulutely impressive. In fact, if you look at the way our sytem is oriented towards the pass, PJ becomes even more of a threat with his 49 catches for 477 yards, in contrast Williams has 17 catches for 206. Pope is a multi-dimensional back, not that Williams isn't. I just wish the media would acknowledge the talent we have at RB too. Pope may just be the key to us getting a victory in Mobile.

Feel free to throw your two cents in Dayon.

And no offense to Wright, who was a very good college player, he is nowhere NEAR Williams' league. Williams is a possible first rounder in the 2005 draft (if he were to choose to leave early) while Wright wasn't even drafted last year. I have seen Williams listed as high as the #25 overall prospect if he chooses to enter the 2005 draft.

That sort of player will tear up our porous Run defesne, I'm afraid to say.

Forget Wright ... Wolfe, Seymour, McDougle. The list goes on this year.

If Beckman's every going to flash his coaching genius vs. the run, this would be the time to do it.

That was the past...things change. I guess I have high hopes but don't make fun of them :P Maybe you should walk on the team next year so you can help the defense out. It'd be like playing a Mascot game with Notre Dame in NCAA 2005!

I wouldn't be much help to the defense. If they need water, I could probably give 'em a bottle. Or maybe a towel, but I wouldn't be much help on the field.

At the same time I don't delude myself into believing we're going to magically show up with a great run defense when we haven't had one over the past few years.

Hey, watch the way you toss around names like that. Us "Freaks" are pretty sensitive!

Should be an absolute great game.

No doubt Williams will get his yards. But I am not as scared of a team with a premier running back as I am of one with a great QB.

Defensively, there are ways to limit the presence of a great running back. We can put 7 or 8 men in the box and have everybody flying to the line of scrimage. We've done it against Ohio State, Purdue, Missouri, etc. These teams have featured Div 1 tailbacks with huge offensive lines.

Plus, against a running back you only have to scheme to defend a 10-yard area of the field. Against a passer, you have to defend the entire field.

The problem limiting a great QB is that you have to get consistent pressure in his face...something we haven't been able to do against the better teams.

The real trouble comes in when they can also attack you with the pass if you sell out to stop the run. I am not sure how good the Memphis QB is? I would imagine we'll make him beat us a couple of times before we respect that part of their offense, because we know Williams is a given.

For whatever it's worth, about our QB...Danny Wimprine is statistically the greatest quarterback in University of Memphis history....he's a fifth year senior who will be closing a career that saw him become one of the main catalysts behind the turnaround of Memphis football...

He throws a lot of picks, but when Danny's on.....he's Favre-like...

Rollo:

According to some UM fans, the Tigers run a variant of the spread offense, so they are plenty capable of throwing the ball.

That being said, while we've stopped teams from running every so often, hammb is correct - we have consistently had trouble stopping the run.

To wit ...

McDougle, 23 carries 112 yards, 2 TD
Seymour, 28 carries 155 yards
Wolfe, 31 carries 202 yards, 3 TD
Jones, 32 carries 148 yards, 1 TD
Peterson, 16 carries 100 yards, 1 TD

The only decent RB we stopped this year was Sherrell from Eastern. Then again, we gave up 388 yards passing, so that's hardly a reason to celebrate.

from the cusa release:

...Williams has led the Tigers to back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history. Along the way, he has virtually re-written the school’s rushing record book. This season, Williams ranks third in the nation in rushing yards with 1,828 and needs 172 in the GMAC Bowl to become the 11th player in NCAA history to run for 2,000 yards in a single season. He has set new school and conference records for rushing touchdowns (21) and total touchdowns (22), while posting four 200-plus yard rushing days, along with a 199-yard night. With 3,942 yards, Williams is the all-time leading rusher in Memphis history and ranks second in C-USA annals.

also, if he can average 139 yards per game next season, he will the holder of the NCAA all purpose yardage record.

As a Memphis fan, I would respectfully request that you do just that. If you do, you run the risk of a couple of things happening.

1. We can throw over the top to Gideon, Scott, et al
2. Once "2" gets by the first wave of defenders...house.
3. Screens and draws have a away of doing away with 8 in the box.

Man, can we play tomorrow? I'm ready for this game.[/quote]

The bowl record was set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl: Marshall 64, East Carolina 61.
