Re: Not too excited about this year
I think the biggest key is going to be picking a QB and sticking with him. If he wins in camp, he has to get more then one bad game before being yanked for someone else. Continuity behind center is very, very important to a young team. A LEADER must step up and be behind center, barring injury, for the entirety of the season.

Re: Not too excited about this year
The updated roster numbers are online.
As far as DE is concerned, Clawson has already mentioned he may use Moore( was Alvarado) and possibly Ouellet or Campbell as well at DE at times. Of course if a couple good DE emerge, they might be Martin or Lynch. Like any coach, he will try to get his best athletes on the field.

Re: Not too excited about this year
Quick thought ... Micky Wagner at DT. He tore it up in the spring game .... but it was against the second team offensive line and that was patchy at best. I wonder how he'll do in fall camp? He's a senior, so I hope he gives it everything he's got.

Re: Not too excited about this year
Its always a good story when a kids sticks it out for four years and then gets some good PT. If the roster is correct on weights ( which it never is ), he's a little undersized but who knows, maybe he's learned a few tricks over the years. They may go with 3 d-lineman, 2 rovers and 2 backers. There really isn't anyone on the schedule that's physically huge. Even WVU is more of a speed oriented offense.
Whatever it takes to get pressure and stop the run. Check out this video highlight from a couple years ago.

Re: Not too excited about this year
I agree...I don't know that Schilz is the guy. I know we were adding to the offense a bit lat spring...at least that's what the coaches said...but in the parts of the Spring game I saw, Schilz didn't seem ot have the command of the offense you'd expect a guy entering his third year in the program.VDub26Falcon wrote:I think the biggest key is going to be picking a QB and sticking with him. It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Not too excited about this year
I think Schilz took over in the second half of the spring game. First half was dominated by the defensive lines. Schilz made some beautiful throws in the second half, stood in the pocket well, and showed some good control of the offense. I think Hurley has huge, huge potential and will end up being a great backup and may be needed should the offensive line allow Schilz to take a beating again, but I believe Schilz is the guy.

Re: Not too excited about this year
Look for Freshman Hunter Maynard @ DT to fight for starting rotation time from 1st day of camp. Kid is qucik, strong, great feet and violent hands and mentally tough. Came in a month ago to lift and condition. Benched 225 for 20 reps., squatting 650 +, and ran a 5.02 40 dash @ 318 lbs. He is a LB dream and will wreck havoc on the Oline.

20 reps from an 18 year old is awesome. I'm a grown assed man and I struggled to squeeze out 10 tonight. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do....

Agree with that...can't wait to see what Maynard can do. It's great to finally have some beef along the D line.Oldballcoach61 wrote:Look for Freshman Hunter Maynard @ DT to fight for starting rotation time from 1st day of camp. I would expect a big number from him based on his size but not a big number of reps- 400+ should be easy but 20 reps at 225 says he's got some staying power. I must say I'm a little disappointed in Flipper, though.

Re: Not too excited about this year
I'm disappointed too....then again, I haven't fully recovered from my humerus fracture so we'll see. Last year I was just getting into training and did 14-15 at 225 and inclined 315 for a couple....and that was 8 months after a distal bicep tear. If I can stay healthy, I think...who am I kidding...I'm not gonna stay healthy...
Maynard's from the Columbus area IIRC....I wonder if he's been working at Westside Barbell...if not, I imagine Louie Simmons would love to work with him...

I'm not up to par lately either-haven't fully recovered from, well, being old.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
