Re: Schilz
Matt made some crucial missed passes last night. I understand making the throw where the guy is supposed to be but as a QB you have to improvise some throws. The drag route to Burbrink was just over thrown bad. Still I commend the guy on not turning the ball over and making good throws when he had to, the trick play(often teams miss these chances by bad throws) and the bubble screen with 5 minutes left that we didn't pick up the first down but kept the clock moving. Important that ball doesn't get thrown into the ground.

You must have really enjoyed watching Tyler Tettleton.Globetrotter wrote:A running QB could complete 40% of his passes and also extend drives by running for first downs every once in awhile.

Re: Schilz
I'd love to have a guy complete that number. But if we have a guy who is completing passes in the 40's he better be able to get first downs with his feet.Redwingtom wrote:Lynch is completing 62.8% this season.Globetrotter wrote:I enjoyed watching Chandler Harnisch and Jordan LynchDayons_Den wrote:You must have really enjoyed watching Tyler Tettleton.Globetrotter wrote:A running QB could complete 40% of his passes and also extend drives by running for first downs every once in awhile.

I fail to see Matt as a good game manager. IMO we are winning in spite of him and not because of him. When I think of a good game manager I think of Alabama's quarterbacks or Craig Krenzel. I'll stand by my statement earlier this year when I said he looked better in his first game in 2010. He showed flashes of being a great QB the first 4 games of 2011 but he hasn't been the same since accuracy wise. Hammb thinks he is good at pushing the ball downfield. While I tend to agree with that when was the last time he was throwing the ball downfield?
One of these weeks the run is going be taken away or we'll get in a hole like we did at UT and I'm concerned Matt and our receivers wont be good enough to get it done.
I feel like a dick being critical because I'm loving this team and we haven't been on a 6 game winning streak in 8 years, but I still think these are legitimate concerns.

He hit a big one last night off a play fake.kdog27 wrote:I fail to see Matt as a good game manager. IMO we are winning in spite of him and not because of him. I definitely think the bulk of our passing game should be off play action and throwing passes in the 15+ yard range. Sheehan is definitely not a guy I would consider a game manager...he's just not accurate enough. However he has a big arm that he can make plays downfield, especially off play action, if we go for that.
To me that's the offense we should be running...a standard pro-style set where you're running to set up the pass with a drop back passer.
Of course like I said I'm basing this off what I know of the guys and from what I saw last night. The short/intermediate passing game is WAY out of sync right now. Hopefully they won't need it, but at some point I would imagine they will.

He underthrew it.
Re: Schilz
To be fair I think he played it safe there with Gallon so open. There was no sense putting the ball in stride when there is a total breakdown in coverage.

Could be. But that counts as one of his what 9 completions on the night. I could have made that pass.kdog27 wrote:To be fair I think he played it safe there with Gallon so open. There was no sense putting the ball in stride when there is a total breakdown in coverage.
He has completed less than 50% of his passes in half of his games this year.
If he is not a game manager, and he can't run, and he can't complete deep passes.....

Re: Schilz
Yeah...you're right. Maybe we should pull the guy..who I believe is in the top five here all time as a passer...in favir of a redshirt freshman.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Schilz
Maybe you could make that pass but I doubt anyone could have sold the run any better. Look, I'm one of the first to criticize the guy but I'm not going do it here because he made a great play there.Globetrotter wrote:Could be. Re: Schilz
I know what the stats say, but he's only that highly ranked because he started as a FR. I don't believe he is among our top 5 QBs ever...maybe top 10.Flipper wrote:Yeah...you're right. I do agree, however, that the WRs are also to blame. I don't know whose fault any indiviudal play is but they are always gesturing that they expected to the guy to be somewhere else.
Re: Schilz
Ohio worked to take Alex Bayer out of the game. Receivers and Schilz were often not on the same page. Schilz badly missed Burbrink late in the game and another one or two not as bad. Not one of these factors should derail the passing offense but with all three, pass offense just didn't work. Hopefully its a one time anomaly. Schilz is running this offense extremely well right now.
