The only two times I've witnessed in person a Bowling Green-Ohio State football game they most certainly weren't on different levels.

When was the last time that Michigan played in a game that really, truly mattered? I could not tell you.

The last time they played a game with NC implications was in 2006.

And as for Notre Dame...they weren't even good, at all, between 2006 and 2011. There were years, especially 2007-09 when BG would've wiped the floor with ND. At our hockey games with ND, the student section would always chant "let's play football" clap clap clap clap clap.
I would definitely call just about every Michigan / Notre Dame game one that truly matters. It's the top two programs in all time wins, all time win percentage, and two of the biggest and most loyal fanbases ... even if they're annoying as all hell. 2009, for example. Michigan finished the season with a losing record, but beating Notre Dame in such dramatic fashion put Tate Forcier on everybody's radar. Meanwhile, ND started as a preseason BCS favorite and Michigan showed how hollow the Irish D really was. ND got exposed in the secondary and ultimately finished just 6-6 with a late season collapse and gave their coach millions of dollars and a pink slip. I'd say that really matters. Then take 2010. Kelly's first year as a ND head coach and RichRod is considered on the hottest seat in the country. Denard Robinson became an instant household name by torching their defense for around 400 total yards and is instantly the Heisman frontrunner. If he didn't have so many injuries and if Michigan had a better defense, that team probably would have won 10 regular season games instead of 7 and Denard Robinson probably wins the Heisman (yeah, woulda coulda shouda). I'd say that game really mattered on the national stage.

But I guess it really depends on what you consider to be a game that really truly matters. Is it one that has clear national championship implications? Or one that has implications on the program? Because if you say the latter, I could name a ton of games for both teams that really truly mattered in the last six years.
They only matter if you care. I, for one, couldn't care less what goes on with a team or teams in another conference unless we're playing against said team and then I only care about it on the day we play them.

1_5....were you drunk, high or in jail when they covered the verb "to be" in grade school?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I never got the “hate OSU” thing if you went to BG. My father never went to college and he was a diehard Buckeye fan and loved Woody Hayes. I think that described most of the families in my neighborhood in western Ohio. So, naturally I grew up a fan of the Buckeyes.

If you enjoyed college football back then and were from Ohio, you naturally gravitated towards OSU. I have fond memories of Keith Jackson doing the OSU/Michigan game the third Saturday in November every year.

Now when I decided to pick a college, I chose BG and enjoyed some great years for sports in the early 80’s as an undergrad. I am and always will be a Falcon through and through and follow them religiously.

However, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying and following the Buckeyes either. Even though I went to BG, I never developed that “little man’s complex” so many others here have. I realize that Ohio State and the Big Ten are on a different level than BG and The MAC, athletically…more resources, different recruits, better facilities, etc.

The MAC still has some pretty decent athletic competition and I enjoy it when someone from the MAC rises up and knocks off one of the BCS schools.

Doesn’t mean I hate OSU.

The only thing that really upsets me on this whole issue is if BG and OSU are playing and BG students are cheering for OSU to beat BG. That goes back to the week of the 06 BG/OSU football game when BG students painted the BG spirit rock in Ohio State colors. I can't have any issues with BG students also being Ohio State fans because it would make me a hypocrite because as a BG student I'm still a fan of my hometown UC Bearcats, and will always want them to win unless they are playing BG.

Or how about going to an OSU/BG hockey game where one of the 50/50 ticket sellers was wearing an OSU shirt. Yes, it happened. Youth hockey parents and players were selling them to make some money and one of the dads was wearing an OSU shirt while selling the tickets!

I come from a family of OSU fans and they wonder why I don't share their excitement...

Oh I remember that one too, that is just plain unacceptable. You are working a Bowling Green sporting event for Bowling Green, anyone doing that should be told they need to be wearing Bowling Green attire, and if they aren't they need to leave and change.
