Fleck said it comes from a 5-year old he met that had cancer in the K-zoo area and the little boy told him that everyday he just rows his boat through his pain because he loves life. So, he took what the boy said and is using it as inspiration/a rallying motto for his team. I have no issue with it given where it came from.Falcon Fanatic wrote:Can someone explain their "Row the Boat" thingy??? What does this have to do with The Broncos??? He looks like a goober doing that 3rd down thing and the row motion looks like a guy having a seizure.mscarn wrote:Precisely. Their new coach is a living, breathing marketing gimmick.
I'm sure WMU fans are pleased at having centuries of genuine tradition subverted so a self-promoting coach can turn their program into a dance club.I honestly don't get it!!

Re: Tootsie Rolls
He's taken it to such a weird extreme that even the WMU fans are tiring of it. They've got paddles on their helmets and the front of the helmet says ROW. They've got it on the sleeves of their shirts under their uniforms. They've given away hundreds of oars and developed the aformentioned spastic gestures that supposedly simulate the act of rowing.
Having a team motto is one thing; this is almost a fetish.

Fleck is doing as much marketing as he is coaching. He knows WMU football is in bad shape and he's trying to inject some life into it. It's gotta be hard having to compete with Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame every day for eyeballs. I'm sure he'll back off in his second year, and I do agree its overkill, but you can't fault a man for trying.mscarn wrote:He's taken it to such a weird extreme that even the WMU fans are tiring of it. I remember reading an early interview where he was asked about playcalling and the offensive and defensive systems he was planning to run. He said "That's what I have coordinators for," said he won't spend much time watching film and basically admitted his primary role is to be a salesman in the community.jpfalcon09 wrote:Fleck is doing as much marketing as he is coaching. Back in the day when they would play the theme from Hawaii Five-o at Uptown you'd sit on the floor and pretend to row like the guys in the boats did during the opening credits of the show. But we were drunk assed college kids. Fleck is supposed to be an adult.... and presumably sober.

Do they still do that? I just assumed that litle tradition would have died by now. I need to spend more time in BG dive bars...or not..transfer2BGSU wrote:You mean....we're NOT supposed to be doing that still.Flipper wrote:Back in the day when they would play the theme from Hawaii Five-o at Uptown you'd sit on the floor and pretend to row like the guys in the boats did during the opening credits of the show. All I need to hear as I'm sitting in the La-Z-Boy at home is the first few beats and it becomes automatic! Watching the real Steve McGarrett on ME-TV and then being able to watch Kono Kalakaua on demand

Re: Tootsie Rolls
I can ask the cheerleaders to present the idea to their coaches. Maybe they can throw the Tootsie Rolls since they throw other things. But I do like the idea of a group selling the Tootsie Rolls. Maybe Falcon Fanatics? My daughter is also in that too. I'll pass it along.
Re: Tootsie Rolls
This is the third year they haven't done Sweet Caroline. The students are not happy about it.
Re: Tootsie Rolls
This seems like a tradition that we can make happen. Sic Sic thows out Laffy Taffy so I don't see how hard it would be for one of the spirit groups to throw out Tootsie Rolls to continue a long honored tradition.
Re: Tootsie Rolls
The One Who Rows lost at home to I-AA Nicholls State, the team Oregon beat 66-3 the week before. They actually had a nice crowd but many were turned off by the DJ (among other things) and swore to never return.
What did all of this lead to? He appeared today on the Tim Brando Show, a nationally syndicated program simulcast on the CBS Sports TV network. A sign of the times...

Re: Tootsie Rolls
Well bad news on the Tootsie Rolls....my daughter talked to the cheerleading coach and she said that they cannot throw out Tootsie Rolls at the football games. In fact, Sic Sic is no longer allowed to throw out Laffy Taffy anymore. No throwing candy at games.

Someone was tossing them this past Saturday from up high on the west side.
