Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
Agreed. Wish we had him for at least another year, but he did a great job. And, he helped BG finally get that elusive championship. Had we fallen short again this year and still lost him, it would sting even more than it does right now. I was happy when we extended his contract and locked him up for several more years, but we only got one more out of him. But it was a good one. Much thanks for the MAC Championship!Flipper wrote:Huge thank you to Dave Clawson...he came in and did exactly what he was hired to do, rebuild the program. Hate seeing it but it seemed pretty likely after last Friday. Good luck to him and whatever staff he employs there.
This is a huge hire for Kingston. He must get this right. I don't want this to be our last championship for 21 years.

I hope it is not too big of a distraction for the bowl game.
I know it is unrealistic, but wish interviews not be conducted until after all bowl games.

Clawson took over a dumpster fire and from those ashes took us to a MAC title. He laid as good of a foundation for a program going forward as anybody could ever hope for, and even stuck around to finish the house. I had a feeling when we gave him that contract extension it only served to up the buyout when a bigger school came calling this year...at least that's what I figured if we had the type of season we hoped/expected. He gave us that season, and is leaving us with a great base and an extra $200+ k to spend on a new coach.

Not sure I"d want McCall but the other 3 would make for very good hires, IMO.CBD2032 wrote:Got to think we'd be a pretty good destination for a good coaching candidate (going from BCS coordinator/assistant to HC or a good coach at a lesser school than us) as well as we should still be a good spot for recruits coming off a MAC championship against formally unbeaten Northern Illinois, right?
EDIT:
According to Twitter some of the names being mentioned are:
Pat Narduzzi - Defensive Coordinator for Michigan State - Yes please. Coming off a year with the number 1 defense in the nation.
DJ Durkin - Defensive Coordinator for Florida - I'd take it. Would want some one from a big school.
Stan Drayton - Running Back coach for Ohio State - Meh... Big jump from RBC to HC. We do have a nice stable of RBs for him to work with, though.
Mick McCall - Offensive Coordinator for Northwestern - No thanks. I dont want anyone coming from Northwestern.
In the end though I'll say again the same thing I said before we hired Urban and Clawson. We, as fans, have almost no idea which of these coaches will make good head coaches. Their abilities as assistants have almost no bearing on it. The truth is told in the interview...hopefully Kingston is wowed by somebody.
Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
Adam Sheier, ST coach, is going to be interim HC. Makes sense. Everybody including me assumed Elko would coach the bowl game, but it makes sense to let Elko do what he does best and not add an extra burden.

Narduzzi reportedly makes $512,500 now at MSU. Forget that idea right quick.CBD2032 wrote:Got to think we'd be a pretty good destination for a good coaching candidate (going from BCS coordinator/assistant to HC or a good coach at a lesser school than us) as well as we should still be a good spot for recruits coming off a MAC championship against formally unbeaten Northern Illinois, right?

I'm not really so sure there ... Gus Malzahn probably took a nice paycut to go to ASU. He wanted head coaching experience and he got it. Now I'd hate to hire a guy knowing he'd jump at the next big job, but a coach with the intensity, resume, and proven experience of Pat Narduzzi doesn't come around every day.Redwingtom wrote:Narduzzi reportedly makes $512,500 now at MSU. Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
Mike Elko has done everything humanly possible to prove his worthiness for this job. He constructed a dominant defensive unit in an era of football characterized by the exact opposite. If that doesn't get someone a job I don't know what does.
We have a system in place that works. An outside hire is simply not necessary and will disrupt the momentum established. The Gregg Brandon comparison doesn't fit because he was here for 2 years while Elko has been here for 5.
Passing on Elko would send the message tha everything that has been done for the past 5 years has been ineffective and illigitmate when the opposite is the case.

Elko is my personal top pick. I don't know if he's interested in being a head coach or not, but if I were the AD and Elko were interested, he would be interviewed today. The work he has done with the D has been outstanding.

Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
I'm not even going to pretend to know who the best candidate is for our next head coach. I remember feeling underwhelmed when we hired Meyer to replace Blackney and Clawson to replace Brandon, and how I was excited when we promoted Brandon to replace Meyer. Look how those all turned out in the end. I just want whoever it is to keep us rolling along because this isn't a rebuilding project right now, it's a ready to go program.
GO BG!!!
Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
IMO, new AD = Outside hire. Every AD wants his "own guy" in there. However, I would like to see Elko.
BG should not be afraid to pay someone $500,000-$600,000 if they are sure he is the guy. But, they have to include a large buyout and or a clause that whoever hires him is required to give BG a buy game in the future. Clawson's buyout when he redid his contract last year was $200,000. That's peanuts. I know they did it to retain him for this year and he wanted a small buyout not to scare any potential suitors away.
If you get a guy like Durkin who is here 3 years, recruits like crazy, wins a championship and a few bowls and he bolts so be it. Just make sure when he does bolt you are going to get some cash for it.

Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
I don't have a problem with opening the search up beyond the parameters of current staff. It's the highest profile coaching gig on campus and you have to do your due diligence when filling the position. This isn't a criticism of Elko by any stretch...you owe it to any candidate to be as thorough as possible, but that's particularly true of guys already on staff. You don't want to create the impression that they were just handed the job because they were next in line. When you do that it creates an environment where people will question their credibility. Look at UT, they just handed the gig to Matt Campbell...that program has stalled a bit and people are starting to wonder if he's in over his head and if they maybe should have been more cautious.
The biggest favor GC ever did Jen Roos was putting her through an interview process with other candidates. That gave her more credibility from day one and so far, she looks like a great hire.
