There were a lot of times where we had guys playing up. There were a lot of times we had guys playing off. There were even a lot of times where we had one guy up tight, and the other CB was off.

It didn't seem to matter what coverage we were running, the guys were getting open. And we weren't really generating any pressure either. And this was against VMI.

This defense is never going to be what it was in recent years. It's not supposed to be. The defense we fielded the past several years was aided by playing a time of possession game where our offense was grinding out drives and eating clock. This offense is going to do the opposite (when it's working). The whole point of this defense is to create some havoc and get the ball back so our offense can put us up by a few scores early and take the other team out of their gameplan.

My biggest issue with the defense isn't the coverage schemes. It's that they weren't able to generate much pressure against a bad 1AA team...and the DBs failed to execute whatever coverage schemes they were running. I think our run defense looked fine on Saturday for the most part...but man if we don't start getting some pressure from our front this entire team philosophy is doomed to failure.

Due to injuries we had two true freshmen running around out there in the second half....as the injuries pile up, comparisons toast year are becoming moot.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Also a good point. Football at the MAC level is HIGHLY dependent on staying healthy. No team in the MAC has the depth to absorb the sheer number of injuries we've already been dealt. And to compound it we cannot even get lucky with those 3-4 week injuries...seems everybody that goes down ends up being out for the year right now.

Nothing you can do about that...it's next man up, but you have to know at this level the next man up means we're losing a lot (be it experience, physical ability, or both).

I mean, how many starters from our spring depth chart are we already down? Tough to overcome that...especially when one of them was your QB and probable team MVP.
