THe five year clock runs...medical issue or not. To get a 6th year you have to show that you sat for two for reasons that were unavoidable..

In Keenum's case, Houston argued that his first redshirt season was due to a collarbone injury...the NCAA agreed and gave him a 6th year. I don't recall Johnson ever discussing a previous injury
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Flipper is right. Johnson can't get a 6th year under the current circumstances.

That is not entirely true. Johnson actually can apply for a Medical Hardship Waiver to try and get the lost year back. That said, it's not guaranteed he will receive the waiver, but he certainly has a valid case to at least apply for one. There have been numerous cases where a player redshirted as a true frosh (non-injury redshirt) and later in his career lost a season due to injury without playing more than the allow percentage of games played (during his five-years-for-four window) and was awarded a year back. Now, we all know how arbitrary some of the NCAA rulings are. If Johnson wants to apply for this hardship, he can. Whether he'll be awarded one is another thing.

Sorry, not sure what you are watching, but that's just not the case. Knapke is so much better than Schilz that it's not funny. He moves better in the pocket, makes better decisions with the ball and is much more accurate. Did you catch the Indiana or UMass games? Schilz could not of done that.

That's how I take that...
2012 Schilz

55.2% completion pct 2585 yds 14 TD 12 INT

2014 Knapke

58.3% completion pct 2128 yds 11 TD 9 INT

I think Knapke has done a good job this year but its clear, especially the past few games that his skill set is limited and he's kind of hit his ceiling. Not gonna fault the guy at all but Johnson is clearly a more dynamic QB.

Not really fair to compare Schilz's third year as a starter to Knapke's first eight games of his career. In 2010, Schiltz completed 60% of passes for 2,223 yards with 8 TDs and 14 interceptions in the first ten games he started in his career.

I agree that Johnson is head and shoulders above Knapke at this point. I also believe Knapke is a much better quarterback than Schilz ever was. Plus, Knapke is being asked to run a much more complicated offense than what Clawson ran with Schilz. .

We also have a four star recruit and a Texas tech transfer. I wouldn't be surprised if Neither Johnson or knapke starts.

Johnson is a proven starter...Richards sat at TT behind a walk on and Morgan isn't even out of HS yet. Johnson is the guy if he's healthy.

So far as Schilz goes....he is one of only three QB's in school history to throw for 8,000 yards....it's not like he never had a decent season here.

NCAA grants 6th year to two Duke players. Sounds a lot like Johnson's situation.

Has he [Johnson] even applied for a medical redshirt? When does that happen? Immediately after the injury or at seasons end/off-season?

The Duke story is a little unclear because it doesn't tell you where they were in the 5 year clock and the circumstances surrounding their first year. It could be exactly like Johnson's stuation or nothing like it..

I think there's a good chance MJ gets the Med RS for this year.
