Great. He's a nice guy. Being nice doesn't win football games.
I don't follow football closely but I've noticed some things with this staff. There is no apparent cohesive offensive strategy. The effort level on defense is often very poor. I rarely see an individual effort really stand out on either side of the ball. This is all on the coaches. I'm pretty sure this year will be an 0-fer and it most likely won't improve going forward
I like Mike Jinks
Re: I like Mike Jinks
Yep. And everybody here still complained and wanted him gone after the first season. We can bitch and complain until we're blue in the face but we can't change the fact that he's going to be here for a while. The only thing that can really be done is to get rid of his assistants and hire ones with more experience. Assuming, of course, that they don't have a buyout clause...CrazyFan wrote:And let’s dive a little deeper into that:CrazyFan wrote:The difference is that Clawson was brought in to rebuild. He took over a bad team, and everyone knew he was there to rebuild the program. Jinx was given a team that went to multiple MAC Championship games and was brought in to maintain the high power offense, not let the team get blown out in multiple games, lose to a D2 school at home and lose to Crackron at home while falling into the basement of the MAC. And all his defenders can keep preaching that Babers left the “cupboard bare”, and I will continue to laugh at you. Clawson showed progress each year; first year he took a bad team to a 7-6 record, second year between the turn around of Brandon’s recruits and Clawson’s recruits period, he went 2-10. But after that he posted records progressively of 5-7, 8-5 and 10-3. And most importantly, the eye test told you that Clawson knew what he was doing. Except for a few on this board and some of his family members and friends, the eye test on Jinx looks like a train wreck and shows he has no idea what he is doing. Jinx was 4-8 last year and 0-5 this year so far, and well on his way to 0-12.BGFan wrote:Much the same was said about Clawson his first couple of years here. Then he started winning...
Clawson’s first 2 years of non-conference games:
Beat Troy 35-10
Lost to No 25 Missouri 27-20
Lost to Marshall 17-10
Lost to No 8 Boise State 49-14
Lost to Idaho in bowl game 43-42
Lost to Troy 30-27
Lost to Tulsa 33-20
Beat Marshall 44-28
Lost to No 21 Michigan 65-21
BG was in most these games until the end and had shots at winning a few of them, and was only blown out by Boise and Michigan
Now Jinx’s first 2 years of non-conference games:
Lost to No 6 Ohio State 77-10
Beat FCS North Dakota 27-26
Lost to Middle Tennessee 41-21
Lost to Memphis 77-3
Lost to Michigan State 35-10
Lost to FCS South Dakota 35-27
Lost to Northwestern 49-7
Lost to Middle Tennessee 24-13
So he got blown out by Ohio State, Memphis, Northwestern, Michigan State, barely beat a FCS at home by 1 point and lost to a FCS school at home pretty handedly. They were also not really ever in either of the Middle Tennessee games and never had a chance to win.
This is your difference between a coach that knew what he was doing (Clawson) and a coach that has no idea what he is doing (Jinx). And also keep in mind, that Jinx inherited a team that had just gone to 3 straight MAC Championship games!!

Re: I like Mike Jinks
The problems with Jinks are not his leadership or character. The problems with Jinks is that he doesn't know how to run a college game right. His in game decision making process is just God awful.
And there has to be something said about the lack of progression from Morgan over last year. In fact, I think he's actually regressed. To me, that's coaching.
I will still support the team and hope that they win and hope that Jinks starts making better decisions. After all, it's not like any amount of bitching is going to make a money tree bloom so that we can buy him out of here.

Re: I like Mike Jinks
Well, the real anti-Clawson complaining here happened in the second and the third seasons. But, yes. Many here were dumping on him hard, for years. He couldn't win the big games, people kept saying (until he finally did).BGFan wrote:Yep. And everybody here still complained and wanted [Clawson] gone after the first season.
This losing sucks, but I see signs of improvement from last year, and I'm not alone. Here's part of what Miami's Chuck Martin told yesterday's Blade:
Miami coach Chuck Martin said he sees a difference in the Falcons in their second season under Jinks.
“I think they’ve shown good progress from Year 1 to Year 2,” Martin said. “I know the record may not show it, but they definitely are a better looking football team than they were a year ago.”

I realize coaches try to avoid offering bulletin board material when discussing opponents. But this went beyond that. Martin didn't have to praise Jinks's progress to the degree he did. But he did. And I believe him. After all, Martin knows something about rebuilding a program.
Re: I like Mike Jinks
Martin was the main beneficiary of BG's incompetent hire. Heck, it left one program in the MAC East in Ohio. The rest can't get out of there own way. Somebody has to win the head to head matchups. Martin wants Jinks around for all 5 years because we all know Kent and Akron can't figure it out.

Re: I like Mike Jinks
I place next to no value on Martin's comments. He almost has to say something like that or risk sounding like an ass. I felt better about Clawson after our 2-10 than I do about JInks right now.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: I like Mike Jinks
Wow we look better than a year ago when we gave up 77 points. Twice.
Re: I like Mike Jinks
And I'd say it's pretty debatable whether we actually DO look better.kdog27 wrote:Wow we look better than a year ago when we gave up 77 points. Twice.
