This could really be a monumental hire. I sincerely hope our defense can return to the heights that it hit in 2012 and 2013.

Last year. This year, Youngstown State went 4-4 in the Missouri Valley.

(South Dakota did too, for what it's worth.)

Tomato/tomahtoe....YSU only gave up 28 to Pitt this year...unless you're on the Greek Orthodox Calendar or the Myan Calender...then it may have been five years ago or maybe eight years from now
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I am thrilled about this hire! In all honestly, I’m way more excited about this hire than I was when we hired Jinks. Not even close. This is exactly the kind of guy you fill your top staff positions with. He is proven and has extensive experience. But this is only a third of the battle. We now have the coach in place, now we need the players and then for them to learn the system and buy in for it all to work. But it’s certainly a big step in the right direction. IMO this is Jinks’ best decision as a head coach thus far.

I'm cautiously optimistic that Carl can turn around the defense. I'm not sold that enough size or talent is there at key positions but there's absolutely no doubt that the schemes used by Eliano put the the team is some precarious positions.

How so? (Honest question.)

Lack of blitzing, playing zone too often on 3rd and longs. BG was 122nd of 129 teams on 3rd down defensive percentage, allowing teams to convert at almost a 48% clip. When you can't get off the field you give up 40+ points and 500+ yards a game. That must change. We saw plenty of times safeties late in coming over to support deep throws in cover 2 packages.

Outside of that...poor angles, poor tackling...a lot of that isn't scheming but it was evident at times this year the defense had no clue what to do.

What sometimes happens in these situations is you get transfers. One negative is that I believe if you are transferring up you still have to sit out a year (anyone confirm?). The other obvious thing is he isn't going to poach players from his bro. But, maybe Bo sees it as a good thing helping a player move up.

Some names for this fruitless endeavor.

Anyone else thinking this may be the prep work for a possible in-house Jinks replacement after next season?
Jinks is hiring the guy. Would he really hire his own replacement? Think about that.

So you think he sought after a guy that has 10 times the college coaching experience AND big name to his staff thinking this guy will be just fine taking orders from me with my resume?? That he would take this job to go down with the Jinks sinking ship for nothing?? How do you suppose Jinks, a guy that has coached in Texas his whole career thought of calling him in the first place? The Failed HC, now experienced DC football coach directory??

It's pretty clear you aren't very informed in how close knit the coaching community is, or how these coaching searches work.

Thanks for the insight. What is more clear that if we had to make a choice at the end of Baber's tenure here of who we would want as a HC between Jinks and Pelini, the choice would be quite obvious to those that are now making the decisions.

So Jeff Fisher is going to be a hotter commodity than Matt Nagy this offseason in the NFL coaching searches?

You're comparing Jinks to Matt Nagy??

Want to guess how many other teams called Jinks asking him about being their HC before Kingston called??

We have the staff we have. I guess I understand the frustration, but not the personal attacks.
