I read the NCAA is planning to have the season as planned and scheduled. That is good to hear. Some normalcy will be a nice reprieve.

What I haven't heard is if every team will be joining in. If not all 12 MAC schools are playing come September, anyone's guess on how the scheduling will go. FWIW we have one Michigan MAC team on schedule in EMU in late November, and Ypsilanti is greater Detroit area.

It’s a bad flu. It hurts unhealthy and really old people. Stay home if your are ILL. Get back to school, work and Football!
All well and good until a football player gets it and dies. Then all Hell breaks loose.

Or gets badly injured, paralyzed or killed playing football? Time to get real already....It’s a virus with a 99.97% survival rate.
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

So you really want to bring logic into this? Shame on you. You know as well as I do that the media will create a huge firestorm if we see a death from Covid on a college team during the season. You also know that the NCAA is far from the most rational organization when there's controversy and negative press.

Like I said...all Hell will break loose. I want the season played out as much as anyone, but you know damn well the various boards of trustees and administrators are thinking about this just as I am.

Is there insurance of some sort for a Covid-related sports death? I'm not sure how all that works. But I can tell you without a doubt I'd lawyer up if my NCAA sports playing kid caught this and was incapacitated in some way or, God forbid, died.

It's also a virus that has killed 114,000 in America and 404,000 worldwide. And it's still very much out there. We need to be taking it seriously, period.

Are those raw numbers or the adjusted ones?

I want life to return to normal, I want kids to go back to school, I want sports to be played, BUT,.....

I refuse to be the person to downplay there are dangers and end up experiencing a serious illness in my family or at my school. I would feel like an idiot if I were to say it's 99.9% safe and that 1/1000 ended up being close to me soon after my declaration.

People want their freedom but when something goes wrong they want protection. That's the dilemma for state officials from my point of view.

The very nature of public policy is risk balancing. The speed limit at 70 for highways is a public safety risk. It is taken because it would not serve the public interest for everyone to drive across a big state at 15 mph. That is a worthwhile benefit, knowing there will be some fatal high speed accidents. The same logic is applying to the virus and also to opening businesses, universities, sports, etc. The risk is considered low enough to balance against the benefits of opening, especially with mitigations ie PPE and maximum crowds. Not that the Doyt is likely to be a crowd risk, especially come midweek MACtion.

My kid is on the team and there is no hesitation for him to go back. Lawyer up for a virus? Don’t be a worm. If the family/player is afraid, don’t go back. It’s that simple. 77% of Ohio deaths are from NURSING HOMES. The fearful should not be involved in public policy. Shut up, leave the rest of us to press on, and stay home. You can be the wise one at home. The team and school will have plenty of social distancing and protocols in place, that is a guarantee. You can laugh at all of us later, if it makes you feel good.

I believe we are in the process of going back to work, school and play with new standards. It still seems ridiculous to downplay the potential seriousness of the issue. I fear the polarization of every issue including public health. The crowd(s) that push the idea that your either for "full lockdown" or your for "completely open" is the pinnacle of ignorance in my opinion. Caution in the middle does not mean that football can't happen yet does not allow for games to look exactly as they have for the past 50+ seasons at the Doyt. And by downplaying the dangers does nothing to get us to where we need to go.

If we use the standard that all risk must be taken out of every activity, then no one would ever get out of bed. There's inherent risk in everything we do. We just need to find the best way to minimize the risks to the best extent possible for whatever we're doing. Anyone who isn't comfortable with a certain level of risk is not required to participate. Life needs to go on. The season should be played, utilizing whatever reasonable means possible to try to limit transmission. Granted, the close contact nature of football makes it impossible to assure it won't go from player to player, but that's where personal choice of whether or not to participate comes in. If a kid who's already on scholarship and his parents decide it's not worth the risk then let him keep his scholarship. There will be someone else that wants to take his place, even if it means he has to wait for a scholarship opportunity to open up sometime down the road. Sure, if a bunch of kids sit out, the quality of play will suffer, but that's not a reason to take the game away from the majority who still want to play. The lawyers could work out a liability waiver for players to sign, specific only to the virus. For players recruited from this point forward, you tell them that if they decide not to play in the future because of virus concerns, the scholly goes away. Grandfather in the ones that were already on board before this came along.

It only got worse from there.

70+% is an accurate figure. The economy has been sent into a recession...jobs have been lost and businesses have been closed ...children have been psychologically scarred by the disruption...the health of many people was negatively impacted by their failure to seek treatment for heart attacks and strokes because they were afraid to go the hospital....all this for a disease that has proven to be nowhere near as problematic as it was thought to be.

We need to CLOSELY examine the forecasts used to guide policy and we need to reassess the Harley Quinn style mallet used in response to this pandemic. It could very well be that more harm was done than good
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I do not question the figure. I question the attitude that nursing home residents are somehow less worthy of life and our mutual protection than other people.
