The Ohio/Akron game is actually going to be intriguing. Ohio may actually be the worst team in the conference this year. Irons, the Akron QB, is good enough himself to keep them competitive in some games.

Buffalo/WMU and Miami/CMU are the picks to watch outside of BGSU, of course.

Solich was probably a way better coach than what he got credit for. Never won in Detroit but took a perennial dumpster team to a consistent winning record most every years.

EMU / NIU has high scoring potential. Might be a fun watch.

It is interesting. Akron has injuries. I would believe if OU wins, you could call both those games more than winnable, where we should be favorites. This Kent game is a big measuring stick. Win- we have arrived (less a run game/O line) . Hang very close, then we are close. Get punished…. Then what??
It’s not my point of view, it’s a fact.

The initial word announced for his sudden retirement was a health reason, but I never heard anyone give anything more specific. I'm wondering now if he came to the realization of how bad they were going to be this year and he figured it wouldn't be good on his health to suffer through that kind of a season.

Just so it's clear you're talking about Solich and not Meyer, correct?

My understanding is that he actually has some pretty serious health issues and it was recommended he didn't continue coaching. Did he take the recommendation because he saw some writing on the wall? Possible, but the guy basically had free reign to coach for as long as he wanted, so I'd guess he held out so long because he was hoping to be able to continue.

The man was almost 77 years old. I think he has earned some benefit of the doubt on whether he had a serious health issue.

In looking back on Solich's career: He went 9-3 in his last season at Nebraska before getting fired by a new AD. Wouldn't Cornhusker fans love see winning like that again?

I was speaking tongue in cheek and not disparaging him for stepping away. I give him credit for being able to go through the grind as late into life as he did and having that kind of success while doing it. Not many folks that want to work that kind of schedule or even have the ability to do so into their mid 70's, so pretty darn impressive. I would say he can retire with satisfaction, especially for any feelings toward the Cornhuskers. Nebraska's program has never been as good since he left it and Ohio's wasn't as good as it was until after he got there.

I spent about 5 months for work in Nebraska in 2015. Delusional fan base. Think they should be out recruiting the SEC.

Fair enough. If he saw this team's performance coming, and was on the fence about whether to retire, maybe that would have gotten him off the fence.

This is an example of why you throw the non-conference games out at this point. Ohio whipped Akron by doubling them up on their home field and BG is already looking up at them in the MAC standings. Sure BG played a tougher opponent today but for the last decade, Ohio is always, always in the thick of the East race no matter what they do or don't do in the non-conference. UB/WMU was a close final result but WMU looked the better team. Miami had a nice win CMU.
GO BG!!!

Some big games this weekend - Ball State and Buffalo could already be put on the brink of not going to Detroit with losses on Saturday, which is a helluva statement in Week 6. Lots of craziness starts when conference play hits.
