It's funny how different it can be watching it on television versus at the game. After the UCLA game, this board was afire about how badly McDonald was missing receivers. Some of that was hard to see in the Rose Bowl, at least for me.jpfalcon09 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 20, 2022 2:39 pm Recorded the Marshall game and watched it back yesterday. Never got an appreciation being at the game for how well McDonald bought time for himself to extend some routes and take some deep shots and you said, made some really good throws.

4 quick notes after watching those highlights ...
- Mississippi State got out to an early lead largely based on LSU mistakes. When LSU cleaned up their play, they cruised. Maybe Mississippi State isn't all that good (though still easily an athletic level beyond anyone in the MAC)
- the starting RB is lightning fast
- receiver #0 is a physical guy. As physical of a receiver as you'll see anywhere. Matchup nightmare
- and of course the Mike Leach factor. I thought going into the season that Mississippi State was the best opponent but also the more likely power win, because Leach is a weirdo. His teams have at least one off game a year. If LSU was their off game, Mississippi State will be laser focused this week. Any chance of springing an upset will be bolstered if MSU comes out flat OR Leach makes weird choices. Way back when Leach was at Texas Tech, he lost a game to I think Houston largely because he chose to pass the ball rather than run late in the game and didn't kill the clock. Smarter coaching and Tech wins comfortably. And just last year MSU lost to Memphis in an unfocused game. So ya never know.

The feel from the MSU fans I've chatted with on social media is they see this as a "get right" game, however they do have concerns about playing clean especially on offense and a hangover from LSU. Plus they have A&M at home next week.MarkL wrote: ↑Wed Sep 21, 2022 5:00 pm 4 quick notes after watching those highlights ...

I like the over at least in this one. If BG can keep the good vibes going on offense they should score some points. Defensively though it's probably going to be a long day.

How to keep this game as something other than a 5+ possession blowout ...
- weather the early storm. No doubt MSU will have at least one pre-scripted drive. They'll score some early points. Just like Marshall did. Don't give just because its ugly early.
- be smart about blitzes. Bring pressure but not on near every down the way it has been. Their QB is a smart guy and he'll find the soft spot in the defense if you bring a blitz and he has a spare second
- assuming the run and short outside games are ineffective, go midrange and deep early and often. Maybe pick up some yards in chunks to what's turned out to be a pretty good receiving corps
- if there's a trick play, make it count. Don't ruin the tempo of a drive
- at least one big special teams play
- win the turnover game again

Re: @ Mississippi State (9/24)
I'm interested to see our game plan vs their defense. Hopefully we can find a way to get them out of rhythm early. Like most I'm not expecting much here but think this team is vulnerable if we stick around. If it turns ugly we need to get our depth guys in because the real season starts next weekend. This is the time to build some guys up and give rest if needed

Looks like Coach Loeffler will not be at the game.

A health issue is a scary thing to read. But considering he's expected to be back for the Akron game next week, I can't imagine it's anything too serious.threestooges wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 12:38 pm Looks like Coach Loeffler will not be at the game.

Here's hoping he feels better and our Falcons put up a good fight without him.

Boy, I sure hope he's okay. I've got to think he would have been in Starksville if he possibly could have been.
Re: @ Mississippi State (9/24)
From Strack: "Scot Loeffler had a serious health issue Monday night. He spent two nights in the hospital. Doctors told him he was 24 hours away from even more serious issues. He wasn’t cleared to travel yet. Hopes to be back by the middle of next week."

Supposedly, Urban Meyer was spotted in BG over the weekend...

Two nights in the hospital. 24 hours away from something far more serious. Unable to travel. Wow, I hope Loeffler is okay. That sounds awful.
At least the news that Robinson is back should cheer him up. I hope the team plays out of their minds for their coach.

Honestly great news ahead of MAC play.
Best wishes to Scot. The amount of stress some coaches put on themselves is crazy.
