Temple story from today's Akron Beacon Journal...

Temple set to join MAC as full member in 2007
By Dan Gelston
Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA - Temple's football program has found a home, accepting an offer to join the Mid-American Conference, looking for a fresh start for a team with little history of success.
The Owls will join the MAC as a full member in 2007. An official announcement is scheduled for today.
``When our presidents and our membership have gone through the process of membership evaluation, we really look for an institutional fit,'' MAC commissioner Rick Chryst said. ``I think that's what we have here. There's excitement about time and circumstance bringing us together.''
The Owls were kicked out of the Big East after 13 years for failing to meet minimum requirements for membership, most notably in attendance, facilities and fielding a competitive team. Still, that didn't deter the MAC.
``I don't have any doubt that Temple will be competitive and a contributor,'' said Chryst, who will be in Philadelphia for the official announcement.
The football team will play the next two seasons as an independent, though the Owls likely will add more MAC teams to their schedule for those two seasons. Temple is to play MAC teams Toledo, Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) in 2005.
The rest of Temple's athletic teams will remain in the Atlantic 10, where the school has been since 1982. No other A-10 school plays Division I-A football.
Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw was unavailable for comment.
The Owls were overmatched in the Big East and haven't had a winning record since going 7-4 under Jerry Berndt in 1990. They went 2-9 last season.

What is that I hear in the background............UCF!! This blows plain and simple. Either you are in or not. The only exception I will grant is if your conference does not sanction a certain sport. I am surprised Bill Cosby hasn't pulled strings to get them back where they were.

Well the big east wasn't really there home either. The atlantic ten is. I don't see this as a UCF situation because I don't think any other conference is going to run out and get them. Having a 1-A program just doesn't make sense for them. They are not trying to use the MAC as a stepping stone like UCF did, they are just finding somewhere to lay. I don't really like it either but hopefully we all make the most of it.It's the Journey... wrote:What is that I hear in the background............UCF!! This blows plain and simple. Agreed. I say if they lose their four MAC games this year by an average of over 40 points, they have to pay each school a couple hundred thousand dollars and never show their face again. (Of course, if I'm Buffalo, I'm welcoming them with open arms!kdog27 wrote:They are not trying to use the MAC as a stepping stone like UCF did, they are just finding somewhere to lay. Well, they play in the A-10, which doesn't sanction football, so they are playing in a different conference in that sport. Isn't that the same thing? Who's that who plays soccer in the MAC? Oh yeah, Kentucky. It's the Journey... wrote:What is that I hear in the background............UCF!! This blows plain and simple. Either you are in or not. I thought the A-10 had football but it was 1-AA. Can someone clarify this for me?

MARYLAND
MIAMI (FLA.)
at Clemson
MIAMI (OHIO)

If Temple wins six games with that schedule, I'll drive the Owl bus to Mobile myself.

Yes, the A-10 fields I-AA football, for now. Schools:It's the Journey... wrote:I thought the A-10 had football but it was 1-AA. Can someone clarify this for me?
North: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Northeastern, Hofstra, Maine and Rhode Island
South: William & Mary, Delaware, James Madison, Villanova, Richmond and Towson.
The A-10 is about to drop football. All of these schools will move to the Colonial for football. Essentially, the A-10 is passing the hassle of managing a football league to the Colonial, which does not currently offer football.

And......Kentucky just left the MAC in soccer this year. The MAC needs to get Temple to come over in soccer or get WKU to come into the MAC in all sports, otherwise the MAC will likely lose its automatic bid to the soccer NCAA tourny.orangeandbrown wrote:Who's that who plays soccer in the MAC? In 1844 New England intellectual Ralph Waldo Emerson said of the annexation of Texas by the United States, "The annexation of Texas looks like one of those events which retard or retrograde the civilization or ages". I think this quote aptly applies to the acceptance of Temple into the MAC.

Actually that record was much more impressive until 2004 when we went 2-3 in bowl games.bgsufan1972 wrote:Since 1999 the MAC owns the best bowl record among the I-A conferences with a .692 winning percentage (9-4).
I did not realize this? Anyone else..
And temple may win 1 game next year. When they host Western Michigan
