anyone going to make it to Boise?
Now that the game date is set in stone (until someone gets another idea) I've set my vacation for this game. Two weeks of driving to see the game, Yellowstone, the Tetons, Craters of the Moon, probably Glacier NP and lots of Plains in between. Probably end up with snow on my tent a few mornings--I had that experience last Sept. 30 at the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
Should be a good time.
Should be a good time.
that sounds like a great trip!
if you're going to craters of the moon, you should stop by sun valley, too. it's not far from there. will be too early to ski, but that's the perfect time to golf, if you're into golfing. the sun valley course is beautiful that time of year; the aspens should still be in full color.
also, the elkhorn course is a lot of fun. both robert trent jones jr and sr designed the course -- one designed the front nine, the other designed the back. don't remember which did which, but it's pretty obvious that both nines are unique. and the scenery is outstanding.
glad to see you're going to make it!
p.s. i think i need to see this infamous BG 'hill'. i wonder if it's like the hill we had on my alma-mater's campus in chicago...
here's a couple more pics, and then i'll stop... :-\

anyone have pictures of your campus? i assume your stadium is on-campus, too?

Here is an Aerial shot of our campus. Notice the lovely mountain scapes! The football stadium is in the upper right hand corner and the famous "hill" on our golf course is to it's left across the street. However, from this angle you can't see just how big it really is...1boisebro wrote:anyone have pictures of your campus? i assume your stadium is on-campus, too?

Feel free to laugh now.
looks like a beautiful campus! and it seems you have plenty of room to expand your stadium when the time comes.
our "hill" in chicago was right in the middle of campus. i think i tripped on it a couple times. it also had a gazebo on it, which provided a stunning view of the grass many feet below. :wah:

It really is even if that pic doesn't show it too well. You can walk from the stadium to the otherside of campus in around 15-20 minutes so it's not exactly a huge campus but I love it here. I'd say it's more historic at the current time because we have a lot of buildings that were there before I was even thought of. It's just one of those places you take pride in, get attached to, and never want to leave (hence the 5th year senior thing I have going1boisebro wrote:looks like a beautiful campus!
We do have a lot of trees and in fact, the city of Bowling Green was named a Tree City USA for the 25th year in a row!
http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/A ... 9e4465ae19
looks like we have something else in common, then.
Boise's nickname is the "City of Trees." it's a little ironic, since we're on the edge of the high desert which actually has few trees, but it got the nickname from the first French settlers who, after walking through the desert for days on end, came upon the treasure valley that was filled with trees.
in fact, Boise's name comes from the French phrase "Les Bois," which loosely means "the Trees."
geez... you guys wear orange, we wear orange. you guys have a kick-butt QB, we have a kick-butt QB. you guys are a non-BCS powerhouse looking for respect, we're a non-BCS powerhouse looking for respect. your first game is in a tough BCS venue, our first game is in a tough BCS venue. your school is BGSU, ours is BSU. we both hate the BCS and trev alberts james corso herbstreit. we both have hugh respect for each other's programs. most folks think Boise is in Ohio.
and we both live in tree-laden landscapes.
the parallels are eerie...

The part of Ohio that includes Bowling Green and most of Wood County was known as the Great Black Swamp when white settlers arrived -- a vestige of a bygone era when Lake Erie was much larger than it is today.
Gradually settlers began building a system a system of ditches and drains. The result: Some pretty incredible farmland and incredibly flat to boot.
In order to be helpful, I've doctored Metz's photo:

Ridge Cemetery is the highest natural point in Bowling Green, if not Wood County. The ridge is about two or three feet high, I'd say.
Bill's Hill is the highest artifical point in Bowling Green, if not Wood County. It is named for the late William T. Jerome, who as university president had it constructed in order to make the university's golf course a bit more interesting.
Bill's Hill is about eight or ten feet tall. It looks completely out of place, in my opinion (but I'm not a golfer).
Anyhow, it is a long standing winter tradition at Bowling Green for students to take their cafeteria trays out to Bill's Hill and sled down it.
I guess you could say Bill's Hill is Bowling Green's answer to Sun Valley or Bogus Basin.
I'm having a hell of a time with this thread -- but in all seriousness, I think Bowling Green is a beautiful place.
The absurd flatness to it all is stunning. From the top of our football stadium -- which is fairly low slung -- one can see the downtown Toledo skyline some 15 miles away. .
I like it. Not everyone does.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
i think wisconsin is a picturesque, too. i just don't have pictures to prove it.
illinois, not so much.
and plenty of people think much of idaho is ugly, especially the desert. i just don't happen to be one of them.
i didn't realize you were so close to toledo. one of the art directors i work with is from cleveland, but has also lived in toledo and akron. not much of a sports fan, though.
i appreciate all your replies! i admit not knowing much about bowling green, but i'm glad we're playing each other so i can learn more about your team, school and history.
thanks!

There are more TREES in BG?! WHAT? I thought there was ONLY one REAL tree on your campus.
just kidding, 1Boisebro, you keep sending those pictures... makes me wish Miami scheduled BSU!
Another history flash... Ohio WON BG and Toledo from Michigan, and that is how and why Michigan has the U.P. In fact Congress had to step in, because Ohio and Michigan had armies(small ones) marching towards eachother, but they BOTH got lost in the swamp, and went home.... There is STILL an open case about whether Toledo and that 500sq. miles belongs to Ohio or Michigan.....
for my case, they can HAVE UT....

We got screwed by that deal. We had to take Toledo just to get BG. Whas a loss for Ohio. I hate Toledo!!
Just an FYI, the cemetary is called Oak Grove Cemetary, not Ridge Cemetary. It was once thought that BG would never grow that much and the cemetary was safe. We have grown larger than even our wildest dreams in 1910. I LOVE BGSU!!

other interesting truths:
1. chicago was originally, and briefly, part of wisconsin
2. many in the UP of michigan would today prefer to be part of wisconsin than michigan
3. according to rumor, wisconsin once invade ohio, but ohioans fed them lutefisk and bratwurst which make the wisconsinites say, "oh geez, yah, dat's a good lutefisk dere, cripes sakes, yah," and then they returned back to wisconsin.
well, at least the first two are true...

Looks like it tops out at 25... or 6 to 4? is that the ratio? YOU CAN SEE TOLEDO FROM THE DOYT? Good lord, it took our buses forever to get to Toledo from BG last year, when we were headed to the MACC. Boise is in the WAC? Am I correct, maybe instead of Temple we should add Boise to the MAC.... (From what I hear, Miami is conference shopping, albeit quietly... Big 11? Big East?) I'd like to see BSU in action, I watched the game against Hawai'i last season... Tommy Chang made me laugh, went for one record and broke another in a HUGE loss to a VERY overpowering offense and a stiffling defense. I saw one play where your, BSU's, QB took off down the field(He did that alot) I don't remember if he scored, or if he got caught, but he was DERN close!
I know we are looking for another game for the '06 season, and since you'll be at BG, why not make a stop at Yager? SoWOh may not be as picturesque as NoWOh, but we have our days
