I pretty much agree with this. I would not be up for not getting a return trip from one of these schools though. I guess I don't understand why we don't press the issue of bringing more teams into the Doyt. I think after some of these schools have seen how we play at home, they want nothing to do with it and are willing to pay us w/e we want just to get us one at their place and that's it. I can see why Wisconsin didn't mind playing in Cleveland, because they recruit that are hard every year. It will probably do good things for them in that aspect.Schadenfreude wrote:If we are set with games at Pittsburgh, versus Wisconsin in Cleveland and home with Boise State...

Wyoming fits perfectly -- but it could be Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State, whatever...
That would be my choice.

I'm more interested in keeping Ohio kids from going to Big Ten teams (and other "BCS" schools) than in worrying about recruiting Texas.Dr. Bucko wrote:We need to play teams that will help our image nationally and aid in our pursuit of national recruits. Playing teams in Texas like TCU, Rice, SMU, Houston should help us recruit the state. Also, playing those mid majors will allow us a home and home instead of the usual 2 for 1.

Actually, Texas has closer to about 370 per year. But, of course, Texas has about twice the population of Ohio. Speed isn't everything. Even so, Ohio's top athletes are as fast as Texas'. Again, with a larger population, Texas is likely to have more of them.Dr. Bucko wrote:Until we start supporting our team better, attendance wise, we will continue to lose Ohio kids to Big Ten teams. Also, Texas has close to 500 division 1 prospects a year. Ohio barely has 150 prospects a year. In addition Texas kids are usually faster due to year round track programs.

Speaking of Texas:
Wasn't one of the reasons we chose to schedule Oklahoma ostensibly part of an effort to try to recruit a few Texas kids -- and not just about the extra $150,000 and the fact that Krebs used to work in the Oklahoma ticket office?
Has Bowling Green *ever* signed a Texas kid?
Is anyone on our staff assigned to Texas?
(For those playing at home, the answers are "probably not," and "no.")

Texas recruiting
I just can't see any Texas kid coming to BG because they play a game down there. Sure you have more recruits, but you also have more big time schools to compete with, and generally kids from Texas prefer the weather in the south!
You will have to compete with:
UT
A&M
Baylor
Houston
Rice
Tex Tech
Tulsa
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
LSU
ULL
North Texas
It just doesn't seem to be worth the trouble.

Re: Texas recruiting
Very good point Continental-better to stick closer to home, and Florida too! In a way I think that's smart because their bringing in hometown/local Ohioans to play for an Ohio team..you have more sense of pride for playing for your hometown team than you would an out-of-state school i believe. The Continental wrote:I just can't see any Texas kid coming to BG because they play a game down there. I think our best bet is to focus on beating the Big Ten (realistically, not OSU and Michigan - but MAYBE once in a blue moon), Cincy, W. Virginia, Pitt., and other MAC schools for Ohio kids and then grabbing a few guys from the surrounding states and places like Florida and Georgia. Ohio kids populate the rosters of these aforementioned schools in large numbers. Look at the rosters. Many of these out of state schools have 12, 15, upwards of 20 kids from Ohio. Of course, OSU, Cincy, and some of the MAC schools have many more. For every Anthony Turner we get by beating out these schools, we lose about 20. Perhaps some of you don't realize this, but Ohio is one of the few states where there is enough talent in-state so that, if recruited successfully, there isn't a need to go all over hell and creation to fill holes in the roster.
