Antonio Smith will play on SUNDAYS
1st of all...Are you guys really talking about the form of a DB. He's a cornerback, thoughs guys arent suppose hit. And theres a difference between hitting and tackling.
2nd from what I read about his pic 6, he was able to get himself in the right possition to make a play and do something with it. I didnt see any reurns for the other 2 BG INTs. He saved the game for us. BSU was driving the ball in a 31-34 game at the time.
3rd Are you guys questioning his physical ability. Most catches are between the5-15yrd range. Patton made plays all the time and he was slow as dirt, yes I said he was slow. This Kid is from MIAMI FLORIDA his team finished to 25 in the state, his defense only gave up about 10points a game. Im sure he has plenty of speed. I'd rather see how he does in the T-test than the 40.
Last the coach is putting him in the shut down your best reciever roll. Not the vets like mayberry, jordan or perry a TRUE FRESHMAN. Smith is getting beat because he is adjusting to the college game and hes thinking to much. Besides hes gettng no safety help as well. Once he knows where he needs to be, look out because he will be scary good. He's a SUNDAY PLAYER. Of corse the first home game is against temple, yea that will give us a good look.
The interception that Smith made was on the first play of Ball State's drive following a Nate Fry punt. I wouldn't call that driving.reyray82 wrote:

Is it just me or is this one of the most ridiculously premature statements you've ever heard?
The kid makes a highlight reel hit and an int return for a touchdown his first two games and he's now going to the NFL in 4 years? Gimme a break. The kid has a lot of potential and he could be a very good player. He obviously impressed the coaches enough to start as a true freshman. Although that may be more of an indictment of our current secondary than a compliment to Smith.
Let's leave the ridiculous prognostications to our friends at CFN.

Reyray,
Your post went straight to ridiculous the minute you believed that a corner does not need form or technique. Secondly, just because a player is from Florida that does not mean they have 4.3 speed. Third, 25th in the state...are you kidding me. Some of these guys came from teams that were ranked higher than that in the nation. Last, the best receiver lines up in many places, depending on the play. As for no safety help, I believe those two safeties combined for 20 tackles against Wisconsin and they each have an interception. (They must have got those while they weren't helping.
)
But then again, you weren't at the game, so how do you know what anyone else did. You stated from what you "read". How about listening to folks talk about what they "saw".
Nobody ever said that he may not be the real deal. Everyone said that with the right development, he has a shot.
Devon Parks was a beast as a true freshman. PJ Pope was a beast. Keon started as a true freshman. There are many more. Keon is not playing on Sunday and as for the rest, time will tell. Look at the numbers other past BG players have put up. Nothing is a guarantee. Development is key.
Another prime example...Maurice Clarrett was a true freshman phenom that just may not ever play on Sunday.

Just a couple thoughts....
I have been very impressed with Antonio Smith. I think he has all the POTENTIAL to make it to the NFL. I do think it is too early though to say that he is a lock to play on Sundays. Its one thing to have talent, but in order to make it on the next level, that talent has to continue to develop into NFL talent. Either way, he should be a stud for us when he is a senior.

after thinking about it, while I still think the Smith love may be a touch overzealous at this point, I definitely can't argue with someone being excited about this team. With all the negativity the first two weeks, it's nice to feel some love for the brown and orange!

My point is this. I love Smith as much as anybody and am very excited about his future potential. But to say that any player is an NFL talent after playing in 2 games is extremely premature -- Especially when 90% of all NFL cornerbacks are athletic freaks of nature. Revisit this when he's a senior 2-time All-MAC performer and I'll talk about his NFL-worthiness.
The only player on this team who is a lock (barring injury) to be drafted is Omar. We have a lot of players who have a shot (PJ should get drafted) but IMO Omar is the only surefire NFL pick.
Roll Along!
